+1. Been using DVDFab for a long time and it's the best I've tried.

For DVDs without Copyright protection - Windows Explorer does the trick.

Be advised that owning tools to crack or bypass copyright may be ilegal in some countries - even though you are allowed to make one backup copy for personal purposes.

your right, check your countries copyright laws.

    for example in Canada...
if you copy your music off a CD that you bought to your Ipod then you are not allowed to use that disk as a 'playing device'. so if you have the media on your Ipod, you can't toss it in your DVD play to listen to it(legally that is). almost noone knows about it; nor does anyone care.

I think in the UK you may not even legally copy music onto an MP3 player...
But no-one cares, and I doubt they would fine you for it if you have the original CD.
In fact there have been calls for this to be revised...

DVD43 + DVD Decrypter + Videora makes a good combo and they are all free.

FairUse Wizard is the one i use,
its great, takes awhile though...but that is true for most "dvd rippers"

    and, its free.
    which is always a plus.

I'd say DVD Decrypter + AutoGK. AutoGK is the best automated tool one can find to convert to XviD.
If you know a bit about ripping, or can learn quickly from guides, checkout GKnot. The is a comprehensive guide at doom9, made by its creat0r. If your desktop has a decent CPU, you can also convert using the x264 codec, which gives alot better quality.

If you can get a copy of Nero Recode 3, thats automated and pretty good as well, and Main-level rips are xbox-ps3 friendly.

I was going to say that also. the March 2009 issue has a good article on it, but if your too cheap to buy it, you can read the may 2007 article at google books:

I use DVDFab, it's free, easy to use and works.

Because I don't want vob files I use a second free tool, called VOB2MPG which 'converts' the vob files to mpeg files, without recompressing them. And if you want to rip a home burned DVD then you only need VOB2MPG.

Too many confusing ways to rip a dvd. After all these years isn't there one method everybody recognizes as being hands down the best ever? :)

Its not that difficult, bung the disc in the drive, open the program, make sure you know where the files are gonna be ripped to, select what you want, audio/subtitles/titles wise, press rip...... wait

Give dvd fab a try, the ripper part is free.
