i have a macbook and am running windows xp Professional on it.

I am using AVG antivirus but what is the best or a good firewall that is free that will work with windows xp Professional with SP2?

Using less RAM would be a big plus. I have heard of zone alarm and someone told me about Komodo but I know little about either of these programs.

    Thank you for any suggestions.

i use zone alarm. its good and after you tell it to accept whatever the neccesary things are or the things you need, then its rly good and you dont have to worry about it much any more

if you are using a router, just enable the firewall that is on the router. it is better then many software firewalls. i have been setting up computers for a long while like this without any troubles.

however, if you are travelling with the macbook (who doesnt?), i would recommend zonealarm (free). there are some other good pay ones (if thats your thing)

    pb,out.

Zone Alarm would be my first choice.

I'm just waiting for the vista version to come out of beta. :D

If you're competent enough to install Windows on a Mac Comodo Personal Firewall is a much more capable firewall than ZoneAlarm's free product. ZoneAlarm Pro (not free) is my favorite as of right now though.

Routers have a built in firewall that is enabled by default.

I also think Zone Alarm was/is good while I used it.

It caused BSOD's on my system.

I've never had any problem just using Windows' built-in firewall. The only thing you gain with another firewall program is outbound, which personally I don't think is really needed that much.

if I'm behind a router, do I need any firewall running?

also anyone know of a site that tests out and lets you know if your firewall is working?

I had ZA many years on my desktop but it would not work with my wifi connection. I ended up with Jetico. A pain to install because of badly worded control panel but rated high on leak tests and uses a minimal amount of resources.
