I'm going to get 4 gigs of RAM and I'd like to upgrade to 64 bit Ultimate on my Asus G1S, is there a good guide for making sure everything in this goes smoothly?

I believe you need to re-install Windows using the 64-bit disk. I don't think you can directly 'upgrade' from 32-bit to 64, let me check it out though.

I know this. I mean what's a good guide for reformatting, finding drivers, making sure it works and everything?
-
I've installed 64 bit on my desktop and laptop with no issues at all. My laptop is an acer, so got all of the 64 bit drivers i needed from there website.
Might be worth going to the Asus website and downloading the drivers and burning them to disk, they can be found here:

I've just had a little scan and they've got the 64 bit ones there for your laptop.
With the formatting, i used the format option just before windows is installed. If you wanted to do a proper format of the hdd, I guess theres loads of programs out there but i use active@killdisk, seems to do the job.
I've had no issues since installing 64 bit, all devices were supported with 64 bit drivers and the software i use runs smoothly with no issues on 64 bit. -
I'm guessing my home premium OEM 32 bit key won't work on 64 bit ultimate, or any 64 bit, will it?
-
it'll work, you'll have no issues there. Once you've put the key in it will install the home premium 64 bit version.
-
Yeah but I can't use it if I acquire a copy of Ultimate without a CD key, I'm assuming.
-
It should do, thats what i did.

There's only two types of Windows Vista discs - 32-bit and 64-bit. Each disc has all the version of Vista on them, from Home Basic to Ultimate.
Formatting is easy, pop in the disc and follow the prompts.
Drivers are on the Asus website. -
Yes but if I have a home premium key will it allow me to install ultimate?
-
Of course not.
-
Err I mean activate ultimate?
-
No, it will install premium, as you've only got a premium key. Activation won't be an issue either as you've installed home premium with a home premium key.
-
Ah, that can be worked around. Your first post seemed to mislead me.
-
You can install a different version, but it will be a trial mode for 30days since you do not have a key for it.
Other than that, your key will only activate the version you purchased.
Good guide to switching to 64 bit vista?
