I'm looking for a free or affordable movie editor for W7. I'm just the common college guy so all I need are the basic or intermediate stuff.

I've used windows movie maker before but sometimes it's really frustrating using that tiny ribbon bar!!! It's so crude and too basic. I don't think Windows movie maker uses all the screen space effectively. Splicing videos sucks and sometimes my audio is off with my video.

I heard Adobe premier elements 9 is pretty good but I've never tried it before. Thoughts? Is it easy to use and does it still have all the necessary features? It's like $80 so it's affordable.

What other recommendations? I'll also look at free video editors on Linux.

VirtualDub is free and can do a few basic staff. I use it for encoding, and splitting or grouping together videos. It is simple yet powerful.

Avidemux is another freeware and it is cross platform, so it can b used in both Linux and Windows.
