I got this info through unofficial channels but it's a pretty good source that Windows Backup has indeed changed in 7 - from what it was in Vista - for the better.
If you recall, Windows Backup has two components; File Backup and Complete PC Backup. The latter feature was only available in Ultimate and Business editions of Vista. It essentially does complete drive image backup and those who've used it would know it works very well.
Now, MSFT appears to have decided to include Complete PC Backup in all editions of 7. The only element that won't be across all editions is that you cannot do Backup to Network. That particular feature is only available in 7 Professional and Ultimate/Enterprise.
I think this is really good news and I hope they don't backtrack on the decision.![]()

Sounds great. Thankfully haven't had to restore yet but with the image its looking painless and quick.

thanks for the update, I use Acronis True Image FTW! Much faster and simpler, and uses less diskspace

Yeah, good news for sure. I hope they add a little bit of functionality like amount of compression. Strange thing is that I backed up my Vista partition to hard drive and to DVD. My 28GB used space in my Vista partition compressed to 17GB on hard drive and about 8GB on DVD!? I don't get it. I'd much rather use 8GB than 17GB obviously. It must automatically put on max compression for DVD.
Good news about Windows Backup - 7
