Have a new notebook and for the first time, two computers at home. I would like to move the desktop to the basement and use it as a printing station and to store files. I would like to be able to print to it from my notebook as well as share files between the two. I have a DSL router/gateway that is connected to desktop via ethernet and provides my wireless access point for my notebook. Can anyone here point me to a good resource that will help me achieve this?

    Thanks,
    Terry

it sounds like you want to use the desktop as a quasi-server. all you have to do is put both desktop and notebook on same WORKGROUP in the windows network settings (this step may even be unnecessary). make sure that the 'server' has sharing enabled for 'files and printers'. make sure whatever folders you're using on the server are not 'read only'. map to the printer from your laptop and you're ready to rock.

depending on the printer, you should also be able to buy a network adapter for it so that you don't have to go thru the 'server' to print meaning you won't have to leave both the server and printer on altho, if you're storing files on the server, i guess you'll want it on 24/7 anyways.

    good luck.
