I have now gone through a couple of sync programs as my stuff is spread over 3 computers and one drive on a server.
There were always problems with them of one sort or another.
I decided I would give GoodSync a try -- It is incredible. It is so well organized, very intuitive, great tech support (even during the 30 day trial period) and it makes so many intelligent decisions.
Though I could have just gotten GoodSync2Go to put on my Flash Drive I carry around, I decided to get that and 2 licenses of GoodSync to put on the 2 laptops I own plus a CD .
They are having a sale right now that reduces the cost of everything (I am sure they always do) and on top of that I Googled to get a 20% discount code.
So it was about $50 -- but you could have gotten just one GoodSync with the discount for $23. I believe they also have a version that is free which just limits you to 3 jobs.
And I got the Kingston 32 Data Traveler (too many counterfeits of the 64 on the market.) to carry around and a second one that will just serve as a back-up.
One sync that took 8 hours to do with Microsoft's sync program that comes with windows -- Good Sync did flawlessly, with no errors and no reports of "can't do this because of blah, blah, blah" which plagued the other sync programs I tried.
One trick that I think I figured out to avoid problems was that the first time I put my files on the Flash Drive -- instead of copying and pasting -- I had GoodSync do the backup. I believe that good rid of all the minute time shifts that caused the other programs to sync more files than necessary.
"cat's pajamas" because I don't what the current expression du jour among young people to says something is just fantastic. SO I went with a nearly century old expression.
But I am up for learning what ever is current these days. I start teaching at my University and the students always get a kick out my using current lingo.

Thanks for letting us know about GoodSync. I'm glad you found something that works for you. I have a question, though. You said the MS sync took eight hours, but you didn't mention how long GoodSync took to do the sync - would you mind posting that time?
"Cat's pajamas" is a good one, but I would have went with "bee's knees". -

For file synchronization I use
jfilesync
It's free, it's easy to use, it produces no overhead and has all features I need with all the different types of sync modes, preview and manual file change.
Goodsync looks similar, but it's not free (the free version is just a trial) and the GUI looks cluttered. -
and/or free file sync, just updated to v 2.3

Of course I don't know how much of a factor that I had GoodSYnc do the back up rather than copy and paste the initial version onto the flash drive.
But all else was the same.
And zero issues of "we can't do this or that". If there was any question mark issue -- GoodSync signified it readily and clearly and let you make the decision as to what you wanted to do in one click: copy one way, copy the other way or don't touch.
I've been using it for a while now and it is so much fun I even sync when I don't have to just to watch it zip through the analysis in 30 secs... -

Yes good sync is very good. All the other sync programs i tried out before it had an issue with one thing or another which was annoying.
Goodsync has very flexible options so it can do whatever you want after you figure out how to use the settings. -
I haven't used Good sync yet. I've been testing Allway Sync atm. It has a host of options, but the removable drive options seem buggy.
-
Would you recommend Goodsync over Allwaysynch and vice versa because I am looking and can't decide between the three.

Yes, with Goodsync. Junctions and symbolic links are copied or drilled down.
Purchased 2 copies and they have been great for syncing over SFTP. -
GoodSync is the Cat's Pajamas
