in my opinion both are useless and consumes much resources...at times sidebar consumes upto 24 mb of memory......so its better to disable both using msconfig......for search purposes windows desktop search itself will be more than sufficient

Lol, well to me, they're both pretty much useless (as eye candy usually is), so why don't you just choose the one you think looks better?

True, i may just disable them all together. I tried out a dock (RK Launcher ) and that also seems alittle buggy. I think im going to sick with oem vista icons and do away with dock and sidebars. anyone else feel the same way?

My Vista sidebar uses about 12mb of ram and I like it.

Milleage varies depending on the gadgets you have running. The whole "uses too much ram" debate is old. Unused Ram is wasted ram. What good does it do you to have unused Ram? People are consumed with this idea of having unused ram--makes no sense.

When it comes to a sidebar of any type, try to minimize the use of gagdets that access the network and your sidebar will load more quickly at startup so you are not waiting around.

Now, if you don't use any gagdets, of course disable the sidebar, but some are quite helpful. I like the large clock. I like the date. I like a weather app. I also use a quick launch and a Remote Desktop app for logging into servers remotely.

a dock is mainly just a fancy application launcher--I have an app launcher in the sidebar.

The key here is not is it junk, but do you use it. Junk is subjective, provided the software is properly coded and does not cause instability for the entire machine.

Again, if you don't use or like any gagdets, ditch the sidebar. If you want an app launcher and start menu is not doing it for you, try a dock

ok here i am not just speaking abt wastage of ram.......any process inside the ram can access the cpu at any time and unlike ram a processor utilizing the cpu will really make ur system slower at the core apps u r running....i have seen that many a time vista gadgets use some cpu resource for their task.......so i consider disabling them better to optimize performance......consider a gadget engaging ur cpu when u r in midst of gaming the performance of the game can be quite sluggish......so i highly recommend to turn these features off for the performance user.......if u just use ur machine for just browsing an d word processing........they wont be much a trouble.......

You can always go Yahoo (Widgets)..
Yes I use WSB only when needed and to show other family members how to use it otherwise it's off 95% time..
Dockets yes use XP= Rocketdock, Vista= Objectdock Plus

WSB is not really 12 mb ...its Around 80 MB when loaded with Widgets...oops Gadgets (edited)..

It also causes laggyness in the system so i use it once or twice a month..

Objectdock i use a lot..its better coded & isnt laggy at all.

Normally 600-700 MB is used on my System but ya..its not about RAM.. its about CPU usage when running Games.
