I have opera 11 and recently when you do directions on google maps, the blue line that shows you the route to take is not showing up. Does anyone know if there was a way I turned it off and thus can it be turned on or is opera just screwed up?

    Thanks!

Hmm, you're right. I checked in my VM that still has 10.63, too, and it doesn't work there either. It definitely worked at some point in the past, though, I know I've used Google Maps directions with Opera before. Probably Google changed something that broke it. Google isn't very good at Opera support - they've made changes that made GMail Chat less compatible with Opera in the past, too. Sometimes these things are fixed in a few days, sometimes they aren't fixed.

I'd suggest at least considering Bing Maps or MapQuest as alternatives. Bing has actually become my preferred map source due to its bird's eye view that I find quite helpful for determining where something is, as well as its sensibility and reliability with directions (Google maps left me looking for a building on the wrong side of the river a few weeks ago when I went with it instead). MapQuest isn't bad, either. Microsoft is also better with Opera support on Bing than Google is on, well, Google anything. Unlike Google they have a Feedback button, and I think they actually read the feedback. At least, not long after I sent them feedback about how annoying it was to get a 'this browser may not be compatible' warning every time I used Bing with Opera with no 'remember my choice' option, even though it worked fine, they made a change so that didn't appear every time. Might still appear once, but not ad naseum.

I still use Google as my general search engine, though. Google Instant doesn't work with Opera, but I kind of like that feature not working.

The other option is to have another browser for Google programs that dislike Opera. I recently installed Firefox to replace IE8 as my Google Voice browser. Seems silly to have a browser for one website, but sometimes it's worth it.

edit: I run XP, and the VM is Linux, so it's not just the Windows version of Opera acting up, either. Probably something on Google's end.

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. I will use chrome now as my backup since firefox annoys me. As for switching away from google maps, im far too used to and passionate about google maps to ever switch.. so I don't see that happening. I've never had an issue like yours and I really hate all things microsoft in terms of web applications or services. :)
