Hi, I wonder if you'd be able to offer advice on a problem I've encountered installing Vista onto my Dell XPS M1530.

The laptop came with Vista 32 installed and over time it's functioned very well but lately it was taking longer and longer to boot (12 minutes) so I decided to restore it using the Restore Partition option.

I clicked on the restore file, it began to format C: but then stopped saying it couldn't. Tried three times and gave up.

I had a copy of Vista 64 Ulitimate Retail hanging around from when it was on my main PC. I downloaded all the relevant 64-bit files from Dell's site and then installed it onto the laptop. It did not format C: but 'upgraded'. I installed SP1 and SP2 and spent a day downloading over a hundred updates. All were installed.

Then I installed a game, World of Tanks, a DX9 game. It would not play saying DX 9 was not installed. When I checked in control panel it reported DX11 was installed.
I ran DXdiag and it reported no DX or any 3D activity at all.
I downloaded and ran Windows DX installer but it said DX 9 was indeed present and then closed.

In Device manager the video card has a yellow exclamation mark against it. Reinstalling the drivers from Dell doesn't help. In fact now they won't install even though the machine is running at its proper 1920x1200. I tried Nvidia's drivers for that card. It would not install.

I find it hard to believe that I've somehow broken the video card just by installing Vista 64.

    Anyone any ideas, please?

    No suggestions at all?

When I uninstall the hardware in Device Manager, reboot then let Vista try to reinstall the drivers it hunts for a while then tells me I don't have access, but I'm running as a Administrator and UAC is turned off.

Should this thread be in the Dell XPS section?
