Mentioned in the December edition of MaximumPC, WinDirStat is a 100% free tool that helps you free up space on your hard drive(s). What makes WinDirStat really cool, is the visual representation of file and directory tree sizes, which is called a treemap.

    From the WinDirStat site..

When I originally saw the article in MaximumPC I though it looked interesting, but wasn't sure how useful it would be. After giving it a quick run-through, it quickly became apparent how useful it is. The program takes a little bit to analyze your disk(s), but once it's done you get a great shot of where your largest files and directories are. Here's an example of the treemap view.

Within about 45 seconds of looking through the treemap, I identified about 25GB of files to delete.. random .iso's and downloads that had been hiding away in random directories easily revealed themselves and were able to be deleted from within WinDirStat itself, no need to go to explorer to do it (though there is the option to do so, if you prefer).

Overall I'm really impressed with the simplicity and how easy to use this tool is. If you're always fighting a cluttered drive, or just want to clean up a bit, this is definitely worth the download, and at a whopping $0.00 price tag, it's certainly affordable! :)

Did not mention Windows 7 in the stable version. Have you tired it out?

    cheers ...

Nope! Haven't tried it under 7, just Vista, but this is just simple directory structure stuff. It works under FAT32 and NTFS, and since 7 didn't change the file system options, I'm 100% confident this should work fine under Windows 7.
