Im wondering if there is a way to partition my hdd so that theres just one part allocated for the os, programs, etc, etc, and anotehr for just data
-
What do you consider "data?
But anyways, to answer your question, yes there is.
The first part you actually have to want to do it. I tried but then I just kept putting stuff on the desktop because I got lazy and the idea broke down.
Second part, go on google look for a partition editor.
I can really recommend one since I don't use them, but the last one I used and that was good was called Partition Magic, but that was a few years ago. -
ok um...i consider data to be things such as movies,music,games....things of that nature

Yes, Partition Magic is certainly one of the most popular of the bunch. I've used it successfully in the remote past. Much less successfully recently (on several occasions and several machines where it messed things up). Acronis Disk Director seemed to do the job where PM wouldn't. I have little experience with it (then again, repartitioning is not something you do often), but I would recommend it. Other than that, FDISK can do the job just fine and for free. Never had problems with this oldie... Good luck!

would either of them survive formatting?
-
What do you mean by "survive formatting"? The apps will partition the HDD, i.e., create the requested partitions and that's pretty much it. If you later format the partitions, that will clear their contents, but won't affect the partition table, so the partitions themselves will stay intact but their contents will be lost. If this doesn't answer your question, please clarify.

nope you answered it...thank you

I'll recomend the acronis disk director suite even if you have one partition it will create new partion without affecting the existing data or files on your system. Its up to you how many partition do you want to create as long as there enough free space on your Hdd.
