I recently purchased an HP Pavillion dv9700t with a 512MB NVIDIA card, HDMI output, and Blu-Ray playback. I have not tried a Blu-Ray DVD yet, but a standard DVD plays fine. I have the HDMI output hooked up to my receiver for play on my home theater system. All that works fine, picture and audio are great. The problem is that if i'm watching a movie with the notebook through to my tv, i don't want the notebook lid open. i have it set to "do nothing" when the lid is closed, but in HP quickplay, when i start the movie and then close the lid, i get the error message "DVD cannot be played. Please lower current display resolution and ensure the display connection type is supported." When i just play the movie on the notebook, without the HDMI connection, and i close the lid, the movie continues to play without interruption. Does anyone know what's going on here?

Try exiting the DVD and checking what the resolution is set to with the lid closed and when the lid is up with the HDMI cable plugged in. Perhaps the TV resolution isn't right. When I plug in my HDMI cable, my laptop remembers the setting for the TV and switches everything to that.

Why don't you try using media player or media center?
