For some reason on my start menu there are all the folders in "programs" but none of the links them, it just says "empty". There is also a folder saying programs in the same list which is also empty in the same way
Is there anything I can do?? if not I might just use the recovery partition

If you have not disabled system restore, just restore to a day before you first noticed the problem. you should not lose any of your data that way. With the recovery option you may lose everything.
-
how do I do that?
-
In vista
control panel>backup and restore>in the left hand screen - repair windows using system restore> follow the prompts and pick a time a day or two before the problem started. Might take a little time to run it. -
Just tried that and it didn't work, there is even less working on the start menu now
-
Try working your way back through the system restore points until either (a) you fix the problem, or (b) you reach the last one. If you hit (b), then try doing a "repair" reinstallation through your recovery partition.

It says the restore wizard is already running but I can't see it, could it be running on the services menu or something?
-
How long has it been saying that?
-
Since it rebooted from the restore
-
In minutes/hours?
-
some kinda weird virus maybe?
I would say reinstall windows if you can't restore to a previous date... -
I just undid the system restore
-
-
Exactly where they were, I'm hust going to back everything up and do a full restore, I have tonnes of crap installed on it anyway
-
Probably the cleanest solution - kill off the old, and rebirth the new.

The links on your start menu are stored in C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
I find it hard to think all those individual links were corrupted at once. But if system restore doesn't work and no backups, well you are out of luck.
Thank God for my backups...
HEEEELLLLP!!!! my start menu has messed up!!!
