I am running XP Pro SP2 on an Acer Aspire 2012 (with DVD burner) with a Realtek Audio AC97 sound card. I am using my built in mic and my headphones.
I am overseas trying to communicate with friends back home using Skype. PC to PC is great...crystal clear! But PC to Phone is horrible UNLESS I lower the recording volume in sound properties to the lowest level. IF I lower the recording volume during a PC to Phone call, the other person can hear me perfectly. BUT right after I lower it, it AUTOMATICALLY adjusts, moving all the way back up without my permission and I start sounding muffled again to the other party! I have mic boos UNchecked.
Is there some kind of fix for this?? I have googled all over and havent found anything. I have all the latest drivers. My friend says that on his desktop, he has the same problem...he cannot adjust recording volume either.
Here is exactly what I do:
click on the volume icon in tasktray > options > properties > recording (all boxes below are checked) > OK (recording volume controls pop up) > lower the mic volume all the way (friend on Skype says, "WOW, you sound clear now! Yeah, this is much better!).....I respond, "Really?" And the volume moves up automatically--little by little as I speak until its back at the top! If I move it back down, it moves back up on its own! Then, the person says that I sound uffled again.
HEEELP! There has to be a fix for this somewhere!
Edit: I dug up online that UNchecking mic boost in the sound properties (click advanced) can help, but it hasnt done much 9if anythin) to fix the problem. I also read that right clicking LAN > properties > UNchecking QoS packet Scheduler has helped tremendously with sound quality, but when I did that, it only helped a teeny weeny bit.

Have you tried changing the settings before starting your chat? It could be your chat s/w taking over and conflicting with the volume settings. Also try checking the chat s/w, maybe there's a config setting in there. I know there's something like that for MSN Messenger, the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard. Also see if Acer has any special s/w to control the volume, maybe that's conflicting with Windows' mixer settings.
