Hope to get thread back that I had going about installing a larger HD in a ThinkPad R60 (9456-FCU) but in the meantime maybe someone can help me with what has me stumped.
I was delighted with the way Googles Gmail Notifier worked by changing the color of an icon in the notification area of the taskbar. Then I installed a larger HD. After reinstalling not just Win XP Pro with SP2 but Firefox and Notifier 1.0.25.0 I would get the icon in the tray but no box to sign-in. And, of course, no notification. After doing update to Win XP Pro with SP3 and updates got the sign-in box back but still no notification. I have gone through the setting of Gmail and Notifier to use either their latest default of https or http numerous times without it getting me notification! If I go to Inbox or All Mail at the Gmail site, when signed-in, my email shows up just fine just no notification in the taskbar as it arrives. I sure would like to have that notification back as I am tired to having to remember to check by going to the site to see if there is anything new.
I have the feeling that the problem is some obscure but simple setting somewhere but what, where??? This was also all about the time they changed to having the default be https and it has occured to me that they broke something in the code for Win XP.

Honestly, I wasn't impressed with Google's notifier, and it didn't work with Google Apps for Domains. So I found a freeware alternative.
Gmail Notifier
I'd suggest trying that one instead. I think it does what you want. Google has sometimes also broken code in transitioning to https --you can see if this is the case by temporarily switching https off in your GMail settings, though if that turns out to be your problem, I'd just ditch Google's program for a third-party option; https is more important to me. -
I seem to recall there being a separate program you had to run if you're using the "always use https" option in your gmail settings... it used to be, and might still be, available on the google website.

Sorry for the lack of response. I got a PM that my thread had been moved here from the Lenovo/IBM section. BUT!. .what they didnt tell me was that I was thus NO LONGER SUBSCRIBED TO IT!!!
What I tried to indicate without being to lengthy in my post is that I have tried setting my Gmail account for always use https and adding the patch to the registry for using https with the Gmail Notifier. I have also tried the combination with Dont always use https and the patch removed from the registry. I have tried these combinations several different times each.
I have always just used the Lenono/IBM section and my first thought was to post there incase some of the more experienced ones with Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads would know of some obscure default setting that results from using the R & R disks that I bought from IBM and used when installing a larger HD. BUT a mod had other ideas and moved it here! Then it turns out that there is NO MOVED INDICATOR IN LENOVO/IBM. When I asked about that all I got was a PM saying It happened because I inadvertently used the "Move Post" control instead of the "Move Thread" control. One leaves a redirect; the other doesn't. Sorry. That was yesterday and, so far, I have gotten NO RESPONSE to my request to get the moved indicator in Lenovo/IBM. Just "sorry" with no action or reason given for lack of action irritates me.
Sorry if I have upset any of you over this but I am soooo frustrated with the whole thing that I just had to vent!
Also, in regard to any of the alternate notification programs do any have a icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar that will light up when a message comes in regardless of what program you are working on (such as a wordprocessor or graphics program).
Really would like to find something that works and WILL be keeping an eye on this thread. -

3. Gmail Notifier
"The Gmail Notifier is an application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser." -
I did download this one and it is giving me what I need. The icon shows up in the notification area and then blinks when an Gmail email comes in and continues blinking until I go read the email. The site lists some other features that I have not yet explored if they work with the XP version or not and how to use them if they do.
Thanks very much I was very frustrated with not knowing when that type of email comes in.
