Ok a little dramatic but I hate not being able to solve a problem. Kudos to anyone who can assist and I'll throw a buncha reps at ya which may get you that free toaster oven.

    Here we go....

I was going to install sp1 today so elected to change ssds and make a backup to go to. I then went to Ultimate and made a Complete PC Backup set.

From there, I took out that hd/ssd and inserted another. I put the os disk in, went to advanced options and selected Complete PC Recovery.

I then put the last disk in, let the backup set be recognized and then put the first disk in. This is the result:

Error Details: Failed to retrieve properties from backup set because backup set is not in the catalog (0x80780003)

So... I couldn't restore a backup to a new disk which I have done a million times before.

I made another disk set..no go. I tried the old backup set...no go... I tried another drive, this being a Seagate HD...no go. The same message always appears.

I got real creative then and changed back from A09 to A06 bios...no go. So I then tried an older Vista Ultimate disk (64bit)just for the recovery...no go.

Any thoughts from anyone here before I pull my hair out?

I would have though it would be the BIOS aswell since thats a variable that didnt change. Since your old backups wont work either...

Use acronis image next time.. MS fails us once again

I feel your frustrations. I usually take a break from these train wreck situations with some beer, snacks and tv.

RE: Error Detail: Failed to retrieve properties from backup set because backup set is not in the catalog (0x80780003) Issue.

Les, I know it's a bit late but I have recently had the same problem that you reported here. This may not be of any use to you at this point, but may to others who could experience the same thing, so I thought I'd post a response.

The problem that I experienced was with the Restore process built into Windows Vista 64 Ultimate. The error was the one mentioned above.

Basically, I wanted to be able to roll back to any backup that I may have taken. Given that the backup process puts subsequent backups in the same directory and just records the different, I decided to take a copy of the backup folder each time I did a backup. That way, if I wanted to roll back to a specific backup, I could do it. Or so I thought...

However, what I learnt was that even though I copied and renamed the previous backup folders as different names e.g. computer name + date, if there was more than one backup folder for the pc under the WindowsImageBackup folder, then when I tried to do a Complete PC restore, it would get the error mentioned above when I selected the most recent backup and sometimes would report certain backups, but not others.

So the resolution was quite simple, to remove all the additional backup folders other than the main one for the PC and put them in another directory elsewhere on the drive, or another drive.

Hope this help if anyone else gets this probem.

    Cheers,

    Glenn
