As the title says, I have an HP Elitebook 8549w (fully loaded) with Win 7 and IE 9. I keep getting a message that says Internet Explorer has discovered a problem with the web page and is searching for a solution and then Internet Explorer is shutting down the web page -- and then it re-opens -- often my losing a considerable amount of work.

I've had IE9 on here since it came out. This seems to be a relatively recent phenomenon over the last few or maybe several months, whose frequency is getting worse.

Today I couldn't even open a browser window when I first signed on to my laptop without it crashing 3 times in a row and re-opening. I finally just closed that window and opened a new one. It still crashed repeatedly.

There are no particular sites this happens on -- it seems to happen on every site.

I do not go (on this computer) to any dangerous sites -- this problem happens with Outlook Web Access -- will probably happen while I am writing this message.

I have a Sony Vaio 13"with the same set- up an don't recall this happening or happening as frequently but I haven't been paying attention.

I have cleared temporary internet files, cookies, etc.

I use MSSE for virus protection, and i keep everythign updated.

The only "unusual" programs I have on here are:

Xmarks Xmarks | Bookmark Sync and Search that syncs up my favorites across my 4 computers ( 2 are from 2006 with XP and IE 8 -- and ASUS and an old HP)

Speckie Speckie - Spell Check Internet Explorer for spell-check (much better than IE spell)

I use Secunia PSI Free Computer Security - Personal Software Inspector (PSI) - Secunia to keep check that all my software is up-to-date.

Otherwise, everything is else is boring normal: Wordperfect and Word Office paks, no games or anything like that.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Any suggestions as to what I might do?

I am copying an dsaving this message in case when I press submit, I get another Internet Explorer found a problem message and lose everything.

If I don't indicate so -- then this message posted without problems.

I understand the preference for Firefox -- however, for my work most of the websites I have to address regularly do not work well with Fire Fox. Until web-designers, as a rule, design their websites to be friendly to Firefox as well as IE -- I am stuck using IE.

I had thought about that and uninstalled and reinstalled Google Tool Bar, unchecking options.

    That didn't help.

But I just uninstalled and re-installed it -- and I realized that there were a LOT more add-ons than I caught the first time. So I unchecked everything.

    Hopefully this will work.

Edit: Since uninstalling and re-installing and de-selecting as many options as I could find on the Google Tool Bar, just clicking a button on this web page crashed IE again. :(

Can you get rid of the Google tool bar completely to see if that is your problem?

It can be any of the add ons including flash etc. I was using just my example. Deselect all of them then use it for a while letting one back in at a time. Once the issue reappears then you have found the culprit................

Edit; when I say all add ons I meal ALL. This includes even Java. IE can be a monster at times.

When you say "delete all" do you mean all the add-ons to IE? or other things as well.

I will start with deleting all the add-ons and add them back one at a time.

@Tree Tops Ranch -- I really like the Google Search box. I don't know any other way to get it these days except through Google toolbar.

And to repeat, de-selecting "everything" on the Google tool bar (so I just have the search box) hasn't helped at all. But I will try Tanware's suggestion.

allexternal add ons to IE. Those that are either system provided or direct M$ should be ok to leave. Such as send to BlueTooth if you have it. But as examples Flash, Abode, Java, any add on bars etc. once you have a bare minimum IE then try browsing and as needed and then add back an add on at a time to see when it starts crashing again............

I know this might not be the solution you are looking for, but you should give Google Chrome a try, very few sites that does not support chrome.

Microsoft's website suggest switching Accelerated Graphics on IE9 to software rendering instead of GPU rendering (found in Tools>Internet option. Advanced). That seems to be doing the trick so far -- but it is a little early to tell.

    I've disabled every add-on I could find.

So far so good but I'll wait a few days and see -- and no, I don't want to use Chrome -- I tried it but I had some problems, it was a while ago and I don't remember what. And the privacy issues with Google are enormous. I deal with too much confidential information to even risk it. I don't trust Google at all any more.

Certain websites that require I.E only are generally websites that were created with I.E. 6 in XP that had Active X enabled. In that case no other browser will work but I.E. which is sad to say the least. That was one of my issues with Microsoft and their monopolizing of the internet.

    It's probably Flash.
The latest version has a known problem with some HP laptops.
Adobe are currently working on a fix.

I was getting constant crashes on my Elitebook 8760. De-installed Flash. Problem solved.

The recommendation from Adobe is to downgrade to the last secure version of 10.

    All the details here:
Adobe Community: Flash Player 11.4.402.265 causes IE to crash

    Peace and Luv.
