There was a reply in a thread here at NBR recently where a member was talking about a program that he used to run his HDD's through. This program would "burn-in" his hard drives for a specified amount of time, testing the hard drive for surface errors, platter issues, general operability, etc. Problem is, I can't find the thread again, and I cannot for the life of me remember what the program is called.
Please note that it was not HDTune, HDTach, Sandra, or Everest. Does anyone know of such a program that I described? Any help would be great! Thanks!

LOL, "burn-in" – reminds me of those "audiophiles" paying thousands of dollars for cables and pay a couple of hundred bucks on top of that to "burn-in" the signal and speaker cables. :confused2:
With that said, it's a good idea to check your harddisk for faulty parts, but for a "specified time"? Come now, "hdd-philes"? -
There is no "burn in" for harddrives.
But you may be thinking about chkdsk (a widows utility)
(Use google -> just put in chkdsk to find command combinations for different tasks, all my results are in German and thus little use to you) -
Thirded. "Burning in" a hard drive seems like a good way to artifically shorten the useful life. Burning in is only good for testing cooling solutions, and that's typically with an overclock.

Nope, wasn't chkdsk. If anyone else knows what this might be, please post. =)

actually, this is useful. I have a SAN I'd like to stress test for a week to make sure all the disks are solid before putting production data on them.

Maybe they're talking about the Smart features in hdtune or other programs which "scann/burn in" the disk to check for bad sectors, errors. It also collects data about the HDDs.

Spinrite?

Go to the HD manufacturer and see if they have a utility specifically for their drives or try 'The Ultimate Boot CD'. It has most major brands' drive utilities.

Could use Darik's Boot and Nuke to secure erase the drive a specified number of times then go run a full chkdsk and look at the smart data. But does seem kinda silly.
Hard drive burn-in software...
