Before I downloaded vista service pack 1, I had about 46 GB free on my hard drive. After I DL'ed the SP1 I actually freed up some space, it went up to something like 53 GB free. The freed space was supposedly the deletion of the system restore points. However, I now notice that my hardrive is down to 43 GB. I haven't downloaded anything in the last week. It seems pretty absurd to have a 10 GB fluctuation in a week when you haven't DL'ed anything. Has anyone else been having a similar experience with their hard drive space since SP1

yes, you are right, most of us here assume that the space gain after installation of SP1 is because it deleted the restore points.
your computer makes restore points automatically, so it is normal that your HDD space decrease slowly after SP1.
restore points take about 15% of HDD space. after it takes certain GBs from you, it will start to delete some old points to create space for new points. don't worry, it will stop itself. -
