So I have a Sony FW480J that I just did a 32 bit version of W7 RC on. The problem is that I have a program that must use some sort of hardware ID for authentication and that hardware ID changes after every restart. It never did that on windows XP, but Vista and Windows 7 keep changing this hardware ID.

I don't know if it's in the BIOS or what, but again it only changes on Vista and W7. Other computers according to other people that use it on Vista don't have this problem so there has to be a setting to change that..

    Anyone have any idea?

It's a special editor program, not widely used by anyone.

This is actually not pertaining to W7 specifically... It's really a Vista thing.

...some sort of secret program you cannot tell us the name of....wow, you must work for the CIA.

In order for us to make a reasonable attempt at helping you we need to know the program name and we need to know the ID you say keeps changing.

Most programs that rely on hardware IDs rely on either a hardware dongle or the MAC address. If you have a dongle, it is not changing and a MAC address does not change either (though you can sometimes change it).

Windows will create a hash amalgamated from the hardware present at installation, but that does not change unless you are adding significantly to the hardware.

So,,,either give us enough information for us to help you or don't expect help

You've got all the information I have access too. And it's not the hardware ID it's apparently the hardware fingerprint from a company and it's called passport. Looks identical to this.

    http://www.satsignal.eu/software/fingerprints.htm

The problem is this changes after every restart on Vista/W7 on multiple PC's and it's not suppose too.

Edit: I'm reading the support forums for that company, Armadillo, and they claim that some MAC addresses are changing?

Without the name of the software ("looks identical to this just" doesn't work), I can't even begin to guess what the problem might be. I suggest you contact the hardware/software vendor for assistance. If the product is Vista compatible, they can help you.

Your reluctance to provide details certainly appears suspicious....sorry, but I will not waste my time helping people who don't provide information necessary to help.

Digged them up and someone had mentioned back in 2006 that it had to do with SMART drive.

Don't know how true that is.

    cheers ...
