I installed it when it came out on my XP machine, and launching the browser pretty much brought my system to a stand still, as did attempting to open an InPrivate tab. To its credit, once it was open the browsing was very quick.
Has anything been done to address the issues IE8 has with XP, or is MS just solely focused on Vista/7 for now?
EDIT: To clarify, the system I tested it on isn't the one in my sig, it's my desktop - P4 3066mhz (HT), 1GB RDRAM, Radeon 9800XT, WinXP SP3.

No IE8 issue like what you describe on any of my XP computers, including the oldest one with only 512 MB ram.
-
If IE8 didn't kill my fingerprint scanner I might install it.

IE has no problem on my XP computers. Open faster than firefox 3.0 and just as fast as chrome.
-
No problems here at all when I was using it with XP
IE8 FTW -
No problems on XP here, either (two machines, one XP Pro, the other XP MCE).
-
No problems with IE8 either in XP or Vista. In fact I finally set it as my default browser. I had too many CTD with FF3.

I just downloaded and installed again on my desktop (P4 3066mhz, 1gb ram), still having the same slow as hell initial load and new tab times.
Microsoft has really disappointed me with IE8, I had been anticipating it greatly. -
I have found there to be issues with IE8 and certain older toolbars. Do you have any such thing in your installation?
Uninstall any and all toolbars and see if you have a different response. -
IE8 was faster than IE7 on my XP laptop, but it still didn't fix the memory suck issue I had with IE where it would slowly eat more and more memory and not give it back even if I shut a bunch of tabs.
-
IE7 never had memory leak issues for me until I installed Windows Search 4.0 for some reason. It used to use about 40-80mb depending on how long I had it open, now it uses 100-200. I have plenty of memory so it's not a big deal, though.
Also I don't have any toolbars installed. I used to have the google toolbar, but that was years ago and it was uninstalled before IE7 even came out, let alone IE8.
I think IE8 is just poorly optimized. -
humor me
go to TOOLS > TOOLBARS, anything there?
Also, TOOLS > MANAGE ADD-ONS
Go ahead and select each one and disable it, then close and re-open IE8 -
I know what a toolbar is. I don't have any installed. The only add-ons I have installed are java and adobe related stuff. IE8 is just as broken in no add-on mode.
I'm not reinstalling IE8 to test anything else out. -
I never said you didn't know what a toolbar is...I asked you to check something.
Toolbars get installed all the time without people intending to install them.
Here's the rub--and there's no way around it--you are having a problem. Most people do not have the problem. A few people tried to offer suggestions, but you simply blow everyone off as if you have some sort of brilliant insight into IE8 and how much it sucks.
Well, you don't (have any insight) and it (ie8) doesnt (suck). And to top it off, you're lacking any kind of gratitude for people who were doing nothing more than trying to help you.
You don't deserve it.
All I was trying to do was rule out a few things, Here's my last gift to you, take it or leave it, I don't care.

I have two perfectly maintained XP machines with vastly different hardware. IE8 does not function properly on either of them. I'm not sure what other conclusion you can draw besides IE8 having issues with older XP machines, or this patch meant to fix slowdown caused by having a large restricted zone list not actually doing what it claimed. I never said IE8 sucks, it's just not optimized for XP users, period.
"Toolbars get installed all the time without people intending to install them."
Ok. I've told you I have no toolbars installed. That should be the end of it. "DURR YOU GOT MALWARE" isn't a valid or helpful response to people with properly maintained computers. Toolbars and add-ons have long since been ruled out.
If you don't have anything helpful or non-condescending to say, I encourage you to ignore every post I make.
EDIT: and I want to add I don't have anything against IE8, it looks like a great browser and I really wish I could get it working properly. -
EDIT: Nevermind, figured it out.
Have any changed been made to IE8 to address issues with XP so far?
