(preface)
Now that i have your attention..
Well, actually this is my first post.![]()
Hmmm, i've been following threads about X2vsMerom and 32vs64Bit all over NBForum and NBReview.
And now about Vista and DirectX 10.
I'm going to college soon. And actually, i'm planning to buy my first notebook on september.
X2vsMerom, 32vs64Bit is still mystery.
But Vista. This is even greater mystery than those.
Many user debate over this "Vista". About it's compability, requirement, and it's features.
(main Q)
I had my current desktop partitioned to 3 drives.
FAT32 C:20Gb (19.5Gb) with XP Pro OS in it (2002 SP2 ver)
FAT32 D:30Gb (29.2Gb) with XP Home OS in it (2004 ver)
FAT32 E:30Gb (27.4Gb)
So far (for 3 years), i've found no troubles with it.
I can do maxPayne 2, GTA ViceCity, NFSU, NBA'05 just fine in XPpro.
I mostly open XPPro. XPhome is just for a backup OS.
I installed all the hardware drivers on both OS.
Surfing, Audio and video works, or other kind of softwares run just fine in both OS.
So, my question is:
Will i be able to do so with my future notebook?? (you know, like having 2 OS in a machine.)
I would love to have XP32bit and Vista's64 in 1.
For ex: I would have 120Gb 5400rpm HDD. I divide it into 3:
C:30Gb w/ Vista64 in it,
D:30Gb w/ XP32 in it, n
E:60Gb for most of my games n data.
Is it/will it be possible for me to do this??
Will i face any trouble if i do so??
(additional Q)
Will Vista's DX10 need new GPU model??
Will current mobile GPU like x700/x1600/go7600 run just fine/compatible with DirectX 10??
-
I'm pretty sure Vista will only need a 64bit graphics card to run the advanced features.

These are the specs from the recently leaked Vista Product Guide:
1. Windows Aero is only available to Genuine Advantage customers who are running Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate versions of Windows Vista.
2. The display adapter on PC must support DirectX® 9 with Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, 32 bits per pixel and Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) support. WDDM introduces a new level of graphics stability, significantly reducing one of the biggest single sources of Windows support issues: graphics driver related crashes. It also improves graphics performance when running multiple graphics related applications.
3. Graphics memory bandwidth, as assessed by Windows Vistas built in system assessment tool WinSAT.EXE, of at least 1,800MB/s at following resolution:
a. Desktop PC: at a monitor resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024)
b. Mobile PC: at the native resolution of built-in display
4. Appropriate graphics memory for specified monitor resolutions expressed as total pixels (X dimension multiplied by Y dimension):
a. 64MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024) or less
b. 128MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 1,310,720 pixels and less than or equal to 2,304,000 pixels (equivalent to 1920 x 1200)
c. 256MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels -
Well... from what I have read... you should not have a problem in doing so, if and only if you have a 64 bit processor. You do mention that you are looking to get a TurionX2 / Merom... The Merom will not be out till atleast Dec '06 / Jan '07 may be later. The TurionX2 is expected to be released May 9th... and will take a while before it reaches the notebooks...
My personal guess is notebooks with TurionX2 are going to be very expensive initially and may not come loaded with the latest supporting hardware.... (but then I am not right all the time ;-)
No idead about Vista's GPU model. -
heh loving that 4 c. Let me go whip out my laptop that has a larger then 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" screen. God the writing would be tiny, but lots of real estate.

Thx for the replies guys.
But still,
1) Will i be able to have both XP and Vista in a notebook? (different partition)
Will i face any trouble if i do so??
2) Will current mobile GPU like x700/x1600/go7600 run just fine/compatible with DirectX 10?? -
I don't know about your first question, but it should be pretty much the same as your current setup, just with one partition with Vista.
for you second question, everything current will run fine; however, full directX 10 videocards probably won't come out until christmas time I would think, since Vista is scheduled to be released in January as of right now. the current crop of video cards will run fine under DirectX 10 and any of those you list will run Aero to its full capabilities and more if you have sufficient VRAM, they just won't support any new features that are released. so if there's some swanky new shading method or something in DirectX 10, it won't support that, but the game will run, just using the capabilities of DirectX 9c. -
BigV, well,
about "Will i be able to have both XP and Vista in a notebook?"
I mean, not that i can use both in the same time. But i can have them and use one of them as i like.
For example: I have a notebook with 120Gb HDD. I divide it into 3 drives (partition):
Drive C: 30Gb w/ Windows Vista 64bit in it,
Drive D: 30Gb w/ Windows XP 32bit in it,
Drive E: 60Gb for most of my games n data.
Sometimes, i would use XP, or when it comes to 64bit software, i use Vista.
Will i be able to do it without any trouble?? -

Not sure if this answers anything but I am running Xp pro and Vista 5342 on my Laptop.
I used Partition magic 8. My hdd is 80gig an I am using 40 gig for my XP and 32gig for vista.
I have had no major issues and have been using 5342 consistently for the past 3 weeks. I did have trouble with AVG so I am now using Kaspersky AV 6.0 with great results.I also like the IE7 bundled with 5342 better then IE7 b2.
BTW, I have no trouble running Aero or 3d flip with ATI MR Xpress 200 with 5342. -
Im running 4 OS's in my notebook (check sig) and seems to be running just fine.
100GB hard drive partitioned:
10GB SUSE LINUX
10GB MAC OS X
10GB VISTA 5342
70GB WINDOWS XP -
Thx Guys..
This is why i made this thread.
I wonder if i would be able to have XP n Vista in a machine.
This is why, i don't think debating over which one to use (OS) doesn't matter if we can have both.
Any other opinion/experience?
Having XP and Vista Together in a machine Q???
