I reinstalled vista yesterday onto my sig because my half of my HDD was being used by something called delete me files. Also when starting up windows the vista orb on the booting screen was located in the wrong place.Updates wouldn install at all.So i backed up important files and installed vista, when i use windows update SP1 isnt on the list and the updates give me Bsods very often.I use a program called notebook hardware control that keeps reporting problem on my HDD.Is it normal for it to say please wait before shutting down?

First off if you believe you have hardware problems the best way to find out is to use the drivers/application cd that came with your laptop. At startup press F8 and load the diagnostics tests. Run a test for each group. You might want to run the 'simple tests' as running extensive diagnostics will take a considerable amount of time.

As for SP1. When installing Vista it's recommended to either download the newest audio driver from Dell's website for the Vostro 1500 as previous versions caused SP1 not to show up in the download queue because Vista doesn't view the original audio drivers as SP1 compatible.

When you did a fresh install of Vista. What drivers did you install from the applications/drivers CD?

I would highly suggest the following:

    1) Use WQHL video drivers from either the drivers CD or via Windows Update !
    2) Use the Wifi from the drivers CD
    3) Install the Intel and Ricoh drivers from the Dell drivers CD.
    4) Unless you are using a specific mouse, I would not install any drivers or use an external mouse until all of your Windows updates have successfully installed.

If you've noticed I also own a Vostro 1500 and have never have had any issues with Vista updates. ;)
