I just purchased a compaq f557us within two weeks the cd drive quit working. I returned it to circuit city and they couldn't do anything with it and gave me a new computer. After one day the same thing happened again. Being really bummed, I was getting ready to return this one also and decided to try one thing first. I did a system restore to before I downloaded some of microsofts upgrades. Believe it or not the drive showed back up on my computer and started working again. Has anyone else come across this issue, and if so any idea what I downloaded to cause this in the first place? As of right now I'm afraid to download any upgrades.

I don't think a system restore was necessary. Install the updates one at a time, reboot, then check the device manager and see if the drive has a problem.

I've never heard of an update causing a piece of hardware (especially something as simple as a CD-ROM) to stop functioning. I recommend checking out the Compaq/HP website and see if this has been reported - and you also should contact the Compaq/HP support, since your computer is under warranty.

XP or Vista? Is your burner removable?

I have read of similar problems but can't find any appropriate links.

However, the first thing I would do if this happened would be to go into Device Manager and uninstall the secondary IDE channel (under IDE ATA/ATAPI devices) then reboot. The optical drive is usually connected to this channel. Windows will redetect and reinstall the IDE channel and also detect any connected devices.
