I just got my new Dell Inspiron 6400 Vista 32 bit laptop today. First thing I did was to download Firefox 2, worked fine. Messed about with the laptop for ages, but when I tried to download Limewire, my internet connection suddenly stalled. I rebooted the computer, and all is fine...except Firefox won't run. Said something about some programs that hadn't finished installation, I don't know. So I uninstalled it, and for good measure, uninstalled Java Runtime something that usually comes with Limewire, but Firefox now refuses to install. Something about failed to write, blah, blah, blah... Argh! Help me, please! I don't want to use IE7! I don't care how much they say it's improved, I just don't!!!

I think it has something to do with Vista blocking Limewire because it's a P2P program, because Limewire just won't install, and it was only then that that my net connection stopped and when I re-booted, Firefox wouldn't work because an apps installation was incomplete. So if I can finish Limewire's installation, that might unblock FF or something, the browser I launched the install from. Only question is, what can I do to get Limewire working? Is it McAfee or Vista blocking it???

Try disabling Mcafee, UAC, and the firewall and installing limewire - Also update Java ( www.java.com) previous to installing Limewire. Reboot, re-enable all your safety features and try ff again -

Had a look at that link and the problem seems to be a file that I need to delete. Problem is, Vista won't let me. How do I take control from its slimey grasp? McAfee *appears* to be granting access to Limewire communications, so it must just be a software bug. I hope. But I need Vista to let me find out!

Well that's what I was asking in my last post. How do I manipulate UAC to my own ends? I can't seem to find the controls...

    Open Control Panel.
Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account"
Click on one of the user accounts.
Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.
Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.
In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.
    Reboot.

It worked! I'm on Firefox again! Thank you! Phew! IE7 is nice and all.....but Firefox still owns the crap out of it!

I will NEVER turn UAC's back on again.....

turn it back on now that you got it working - that would be suggested for extra security.

Yeah, will do. But if it screws me around again, I now know how to defeat it!

Next job is to get Limewire working. Any ideas? Might start a new thread if not...

It's working! Now, once Limewire is done, I'll download a torrent program, and I'll be done, I think.....
