I've never used a registry cleaner and I don't know whether one can help me.

Here's my problem. I'm having a software conflict (surprise, surprise :( ) with Vista and my HP printer. Printer worked fine for a year. Now won't print. I have the CD but I can't uninstall the drivers completely. So I can't reinstall it. HP told me that remains of the drivers were still in my registry and that I had to do a complete reformat in order to reinstall the drivers.

Is this true? Is there any way, like a registry cleaner, to do the uninstall?

    Thanks for your help.

Many of HP printers offer driver cleaner/removal tool. Visit HP site and search for the printer model.

    cheers ...

forget the HP site--navigating the HP site requires a master's degree in computer science, but then success only occurs have drinking large quantities of alcohol.

Fortunately, the CD you have almost always has a driver removal tool on it in one of the subdirectories. (I think it's called "utility", but I have long since abandoned HP products)

Now, you would think that the HP support people would know that, wouldn't you, but those folks are only one step above Dell support.

(Actually, I think Dell is better!)

I just double checked the CD. The only options I have are install and exit. When I first put the CD in a number of weeks ago, I had the option to uninstall. It's now disappeared.

I found the place on the HP website where it's supposed to tell you how to do it. But, the directions that seem to be the ones I need are screwed up and the rest of the stuff is useless.

Totally infuriating  to have a functional printer that won't function. (I know it works bec/ it works with my old Inspiron with Windows XP).

Any other thoughts besides a reformat which I'm not doing?

Have you tried a registry cleaner like CCleaner?
It's a free program that I have used extensively and it has never given me any problems.
If the problem is merely some HP entries in the registry, CCleaner can likely delete those.
    Cheers.

try going to control panel -> printers. Click on File -> server properties, and see if the driver is still there. If it is, remove it. You may have to restart the print spooler service if you cannot delete it.

It's not a choice on the CD install application, it is buried on the CD itself and you need to run it as a simple command line program.

Right click the CD, choose EXPLORER

When explorer appears look for a folder called UTILITY or SUPPORT--I cannot recall the folder name.

    The process is

Uninstall everything that says HP in it in CONTROL PANEL > ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE (or PROGRAMS AND FEATURES In Vista)

The run the cleanup program from the CD as described above. There is no setup routine, it is a simple script that opens a black command linebox that looks like DOS and runs several commands and then closes.

I think there might even be 3 commands you have to run. Cannot recall for certain.

I suppose it is possible your particular model does have a cleaner associated with it, but I know it was still there for the 6300 series which is still available because I ran it about three weeks ago for someone.

The problem is tht many of the HP programs simply will not uninstall. I click the continue box and then I'm returned to the list. I was able to uninstall pieces of the software... I think the main driver (if there is such a thing) but a number of other pieces remain.

That's fine....after you uninstall everything that will (or will not), that is when you run the programs in the folder on the cd.

Have you looked through the cd? You don't seem the least bit interested in putting any effort into really solving this problem...tell you what, I will make this easy for you.

    Go here:

    http://www.mitec.cz/

    Download DIRLIST

Put your HP install CD into the cd drive.

    Run DIRLIST

    Choose your CD drive.

Click every box on the bottom

    Click START

wait a second, then choose CSV on the right, click PREVIEW

Click SAVE (put it on your desktop.) zip it up

    Attached it.
