I was wondering if anyone can help me here.
I am having trouble with my desktop (P4 3.2Ghz, 200GB HD, 2GB RAM, Ati graphics, Windows XP Media Edition) - worked like a champ for years until this unexpected issue appeared.
It all happened when my system froze and I manually restarted it.
When booting, it always hangs at the Windows screen.
I tried Safe Mode, SM w/ Networking & SM w/Command Prompt & it keeps on stopping at giveio.sys This may be related to the Speed Fan program I had installed, but everything worked fine for months, and I don't know how to stop giveio.sys.
I tried booting from the last known configuration to no avail.
On the Windows XP start-up screen, the bar freezes after a minute and I have to restart my desktop again. And it keeps on happening no matter how many times I restart it.![]()
I tried:
1. Resetting the RAM modules
2. Changing the HD Cable
3. Looking into the Bios
4. Unplugging all connected USB Devices.
Currently trying to use AVG Recovery Program (boot from CD) to dig up giveio.sys in the registry, but cannot find it.
Can anyone please help me?
I would really appreciate any suggestions!

1. THis may be of some help http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/735401.html
(booting to the recovery console from an XP cd seems like the best choice and renaming the file
2. IT is a bit extreme but you could try a repair install with a windows XP disk. Do you have one with SP2 integrated (that will save some time)? Also as the article suggests you should do a full system backup prior to attempting this
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install -
Thanks for replying. I don't have a repair install disk, and I can't do a backup since I can't access my desktop.
When I boot normally, the Windows screen hangs and freezes.
When I restart and boot from any of the safe modes, it ends with giveio.sys and automatically reboots by itself.
I tried "last know configuration" but the Windows Screen also locks up.
I think this is a software issue and giveio.sys (which I have never seen before) is the culprit. Is there any way of removing it by booting some program from the CD Drive? -
Yes that is a good idea, Download | Ubuntu
I assume you have another computer that you can create the UBUNTU CD?
(Step 3 in the links explains - boot from the UBUNTU CD - and run Linux - you can manipulate windows files (such as Giveio.sys) from the Linux OS
Once it is fixed I would suggest this program http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/features.html You can create backups or restore by booting from a USB drive or CD (when windows will not load). Has saved me hours of work a few times. -
I have another computer, but what good will installing Ubuntu do?
What exactly does giveio.sys mean?
I did not install or update any files, nor were there any signs of malware.
The computer just froze all of a sudden - ctrl+alt+tab didn't even work.
I had to manually turn off the computer and when I started it up, it kept freezing on the windows screen. -

this dude had a similar issue (just a differnet file) maybe his explaintion is clearer than mine
I also added some info to post 4 above about Step 3 -
Okay. I will try it. So I boot Ubuntu from a CD while my desktop HD is plugged in and I would use the OS to access my files, find and remove the giveio.sys?
-
The boot CD doesn't seem to be working.
Any other suggestions? -
If giveio.sys is showing, and it hangs after that, it is likely that giveio.sys has already loaded and not the issue (if it was bluescreening, that's different)
Download the following file
Recovery Console iso file–you asked for it | The Computer Paramedic
It is an image of a Windows XP Home recovery conole, very small.
Burn the image to a CD--don't burn the file, burn the image using a program like isorecorder
ISO Recorder
Start the computer with the CD, load the recovery console, and run
chkdsk /r
My guess is you have a corrupted file system or a failing harddrive. If it is a corrupted file system, chkdsk will clear the issue and your computer will start. If the harddrive has a bad sector, chkdsk will attempt to move the file from the bad sector, mark it bad, and let you start your computer, though I would strongly suggest replacing the harddrive after that.
