I recently just purchased a HP Compaq c502us, and it seems like a nice machine. has 512mb ram currently (going to upgrade eventually) and 1.86 ghz speed. After getting it up and running, boy i have to say vista has got to be the slowest thing ever or somthing. My computer is running slower than our old computer with 700 somthing ghz and 256 ram. I'm not really against vista but I currently have a copy of "Windows XP pro SP2" and i would like to install it on this computer, but is there anything else that I will need other than the Windows Xp pro sp2 disk? Also could someone just simplify the directions on how to get rid of vista and put my Xp pro on? I've heard somthing about reformating, but I havn't seen any clear directions how to do it. I really dont want to screw up my computer by I have given vista a chance and i'll consider going back someday, but for now i want xp pro. So help in accomplishing this would be excellent. I dont see why the put vista on this computer because vista obviously is much more demanding this computer can put out, compared to xp atleast. but anywaysThank you very much in advance. P.s. please dont tell me to try out vista more and i will like it.

your computer is slow because of ram and processor but espcially ram
my comp can't handle it good
anyway if you don't want to spend money on that, then just install the window xp disk. i hope this might work but..
1just put xp in to rom and restart
2load up the xp
3as you install it formats the hard drive or erasing all stuff
4and there the install of xp
i don't know exactly but this might work -
Couple of things.
1. Make sure you have backup disks (not sure if it came with them) if you get rid of the OS someday you may want to go back to it.
2. DO you have a XP key spare? Obviously if you already have that copy of XP installed somewhere you are legally not allowed to install it onto your new laptop too. -
I do indeed have a key, because i have a new copy of Windows Xp pro sp2. Now, i have just read this entire forum http://www.wackbag.com/showthread.php?t=60779&page=3 and this man appears to have been trying to do the exact same thing I want to do, but I read and it seems by page 3 he still did not have a full functioning windows XP. This is the most rediculous thing ever, why would they put Vista on this computer when it is obviously not cappable enough to run it?????? All i have is the windows xp pro sp2 disk, and i do not want to screw up the computer, but Vista runs horrablely on it! Even itunes lags, i can't even scroll threw my music without it lagging all over the place... . I got this computer as a present, and it's pretty sad to see that It can barely run when it has 1.86ghz and 512 ram, which im going to upgrade to a gig anyways. If anyone has any more info on how i can do this on this computer please please please please help!

You should know that the reason iTunes is slow is Apple's stupidity. They have not released a Vista version of it yet, even though they had the source code for months.
Also, another reason you could be having speed issues is Compaq (like Dell) loads a ton of crapware onto their machines. Try cleaning it all off, that may help.
If you do feel you have to go to XP, you will need to do a clean wips and probably also fixboot and/or fixmbr (XP and Vista have different types of MBR code). -
Unfortunately, the c500 series of notebooks appears to be a completely new line that launched with Vista (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that), and is only available from select retailers. Since it launched with Vista, there are no drivers designed for the machine for XP. You may be able to get working drivers from the individual component manufacturers, but they aren't going to be available from HP. It may be more of a pain than it's worth, and you won't get any HP support using XP on the machine since they won't have supplied the drivers. It's not a terribly underpowered Vista machine -- but it desperately needs at least 1 GB of RAM. Once you've upgraded that, you may find that the speed increases enough not to go through the trouble of installing XP.
As for directions, if you do decide to go back to XP:
1) Create the system restore discs, so you can go to Vista later. Also backup anything you've put on the machine.
2) Reboot. Hit F10 to go into the BIOS. Find the option for "Native SATA support", and set it to off or disabled. XP won't find your hard drive otherwise. Select, "Save and exit" to reboot.
3) Put in your XP CD and boot from that. It will ask you where you want to install. Select your hard drive, choose advanced options, and select "Format". This will wipe Vista (and everything else) off your machine completely.
4) Once that's done, continue with XP's setup.
5) After XP is completely installed and you get to the desktop, you should do a Windows Update (hopefully will find some more drivers) to get the system up to date.
6) Finally, look in your device manager to see what device drivers haven't been found, and then hope like hell that you can find them. Some, like the card reader driver, you can probably get from HP's site, by searching under another notebook model (try dv6000t CTO) that hopefully uses the same components. Some may be much more difficult to obtain.
Anyway, good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions.
(P.S. As to why the machine comes with Vista when it lacks the RAM to run Vista effectively, the answer is simple: retailers. They want Vista systems, and they know that the cheaper the system the more it sells. So they get manufacturers to create the least expensive systems they can that will run Vista. These are the systems the put on the front page of ads to get people into the store... then the salespeople usually try to sell up to a higher model.) -
currently im going to get rid of the trial versions of norton antivirus, to see if that increases speed for the time being, ,, . I dont download anything really at all, and will use AVG free virus stuff, because i think Norton slows it down a bit. Yeh im definatly going to upgrade to atleast 1g ram though. But thank you for the advice , im probably just going to stick with vista as i don't really ahve the time to go searching for drivers and such. I also de-crappified vista with the de-crapifier, as well as changed startup programs to only what is needed. So i guess I'll see how it runs until i can get more ram.
-
Gota say though, loving my iMac that i got a few months ago. 2ghz, 1g ram and it runs fabulous. Half life 2, doom 3, Reason 3.0, you name it.
-
Itunes runs quiclky on Vista on my machine. Slowness has nothing to do with Itunes. It sucks that retailers sell Vista PCs with low Memory.
Norton slows EVERYTHING down. lol
I thought Norton doesn't work on Vista.
Free Avast Antivirus is the most stable on Vista IMO. -
Nope...Norton has some type of patch that allows their software to run in Vista now.
The Norton plague continues. -
alright guys, another problem with vista , i just found out, please help me if possable. I have many burned games on dvd-r's and, vista will not open any of them. As many of my music programs have been burnt by friends, and games, this is extremely frustrating. could someone please tell me how i could open a dvd-r on vista????
-
anyone? Please i really need to know how because like all my stuff is on dvd-r's.

cheers ... -
. did they release this patch before the delivery of the machines, or the users must download it from their site?
. does this patch works with the trial copy/period? or the users would be sucked in to doll out the $$$?
agreeing with LIVEFRMNYC - go Avast, cheap & reliable & proven under vista (funny that they - avast - did not claim it though)
cheers ... -
, i thought i burned master disks? which is what that site said that you gave me, they worked on my Mac bootcamp, all of them opened fine. Maybe i didn't though im not sure. How can i burn a master disk on my mac? I saved the disk images of my programs so i can burn them to a dvd-r but ... how do i make them master disks so they'll run on vista? Oh yeh one more question. Could you people who are running vista tell me what program would be appropriet to delete??? Im not sure about keeping "Hp total care advisor" and "Compaq connections," or AdobeCollabSync which im not sure if i should make start always at startup. these i dont see how i am using them or how i need them. thanks
-
how about a pic of ur start.up processes? then we probably can pitch in for some good suggestions as which ones to remove from the start.up
i would not recommend removing ANY softwares on ur vista box at the moment. It has been delivered as "working", so if no reason to have xtra disk space. leave them for now

didn't feel like trying to get an image up so im gona list all the programs that are in the uninstall menu, where you can remove/uninstall w/e. Here they are
activation assistant for the 2007 microsoft office suites
Adobe flash player 9 active x
adobe reader 8
compaq connections (remove only)
Conexant HD Audio
DivX
HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
HP Customer experience enhancements
HP DVD Play 3.0
HP Easy Setup - Core
Hp Easy Setup - Frontend
HP Help and Support
HP Quick Launch Buttons 6.10 B9
HP Total Care Advisor
HP Update
HP Wireless Assistant
HP Network Assistant
JAVA (TIM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Microsoft Works
Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
Viewpoint Media Player
so thats all the ones it shows in Uninstall or change a program. Wondering what would be ok to get rid of out of those. -
i would not recommend touching the uninstall/removal part.
what about the "start.up processes"? this is where the bottlenecks are, not the installed programmes. Download cCleaner, run Tools-> StartUp; easy way to control ur start.up processes
cheers ... -
Alright here's what i have that starts up when my computer stars up, if you guys could help me chooose which ones are not necessary, and could be removed from starting up when the machine starts up, but not being deleted that would be great. Heres the list
Intel(R) Common User Interface
HP Quick Launch Buttons
HP Wireless Assistant
Adobe Reader Synchronizer
HP Connections
Currently i have unselected..
AIM
HP Health Check Scheduler
hp digital imaging - hp all-in one series
HP Total Care Advisor
Itunes

Everytime i start up though it gives this annoying notice in the bottom right that i have disabled some startup items, which obviously i know. How can i get rid of it? -
HP Wireless Assistant -> not really needed
Adobe Reader Synchronizer -> not really needed
HP Connections -> not needed
...
cheers ... -
Sounds like a typical OEM crrapware deluge build.
I am waiting for a Delle1705 with Vista, and am ready to reformat and reinstall as soon as I get it (to get rid of the Dell bloatware). -
