    Hi ,
Hoping someone has some ideas on how to get my SD reader working again. Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP SP2 . My device manager has a yellow circle with ! in it . Tried update drivers , uninstall, reinstall . XP Help, troubleshooting wasn't. I had Dell on the phone for an hour without any luck . They tried downloading drivers from Microsoft . The computer seems to recognize a card has been put in the slot with an audible, but can't read it . Also made sure the card worked in a different computer. Any thoughts, appreciate the help.

I have had a similar problem on my Gateway 3550GZ laptop. After countless hours trying to reinstall drivers and such (which XP does realize there is a card reader there...), a Gateway tech person and I deduced that the reader is simply dead, and there is nothing to do about it. Sounds like yours is dead too, sorry for the bad news.

    Kozzney,
Thank you for the response ! Not the answer I was looking for , but I believe I still have warranty , so if I can convince Dell that that is the problem , they should replace it . Need to decide if it's worth it though. Thanks, LaxPac

I am not sure if your card reader works in Linux but if it does then maybe try booting from a linux live cd to see if it works there.

Also reinstalling Windows would help if its a software problem.

You have already tried deleting the reader in device manager and all the drivers too and installing it again right?

Well, reading your post got me to researching again, and I think I may have found a Windows XP Hotfix that might fix your problem called Hotfix KB921413. Here is the link to Microsoft describing the problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/921413

And here is a link to a website that has it for download, just do a ctrl+f to search for KB921413:

    http://hf.xable.net/index.php

I downloaded and installed the Hotfix, but it did not work for me, however, I still think that mine is just plain dead, while yours could still work. Hope this helps!

Wave, Thanks for the thought on reinstall . Being low on the computer knowledge scale, I am reluctant for fear of messing something up. I did try delete , uninstall a couple of times to no avail. May go the reinstall route BUT ,

Kozzney , you may be on to the problem , I did have a message that said "code 10" which is mentioned in the hotfix description. I am now hopeful. Will try it when I get home,

Thanks , I appreciate the help,

code 10 means that windows cant "start" the device which means it works probably i have a psx to usb converter that for some reason gave a code 10 when plugged into my dads pc unplugging and then replugging repetedly usually got it working but on any other pc i have used it on it has always worked properly so that could also be the problem if the hotfix dont solve it of course :D
