Help Diagnosing Random System Freezing

I've been dealing with system freezes on my Inspiron 1545 laptop for quite some time now and I haven't come up with a solution for it yet. Perhaps you guys can help me diagnose the issue.

System Specifications
Dell Inspiron 1545
Win 7 Pro 64bit
T9400 Processor (2.66ghz w/ Throttle Stop)
8gb RAM
Crucial M4 256gb SSD

Issue Description
The freezes occur completely randomly. I haven't seen any pattern of any sort. Keyboard, touchpad and mouse (when connected) become completely unresponsive. I have to power it down and reboot. I've tried leaving the system alone for upwards of half an hour to see if it becomes responsive again, but it does not. The fan kicks on shortly after the freeze and stays on until I power down.

What I've Tried So Far
- I've run scans using MSE, AVG, Malwarebytes, etc to no avail.
- I've run Memtest for 24hrs straight with no errors
- I've tried using just 1x 4gb sitck at a time
- I've updated all drivers
- I though it might have been a SSD issue last year so I sent in my 128gb and got a new one (which I sold and upgraded to 256gb). Problem still persists after fresh install of Windows/programs
- Prime 95
- Monitored temps (all reasonable)
- WhoCrashed doesn't pick anything up

Anyone have any suggestions?

 

Does this happen on battery and AC power (or have you checked)? Have you tried a BIOS reset (by removing the battery and draining/resetting the EC in the process)?

Sounds like you've exhausted quite a few things, so all I can think of is perhaps there is a resource conflict of some sort. Maybe even an IRQ conflict.

 

Yes, it happens on both a/c and battery power. I haven't done a reset for that purpose, but it would've been reset the last time I repasted 2 weeks ago.

I'm not seeing any IRQ conflicts in device manager, but maybe it wouldn't show up right away..?

 

1. It sure sounds like hardware issue to me.. I recently worked on a similar Dell and running the imbedded diagnostics (f12 at after power on) helpded to diagnose the issue.
2. I am sure you looked but for any lurkers did you check system logs?
3. Are you using any peripheral devices when the freezes occur?

 

I had somewhat of a similar issue a while back, I went to into the device manager and for all of my peripherals I went to power management tab and unchecked " allow to put to sleep" for any that had this. Haven't had that issue since.

 

You could also look at the event viewer for any critical errors, it might give you some insight on what is happening.

@JOSEA: Sometimes we're so used to our systems working that we look everywhere, but the system logs since we assume that it won't be that simple to find the issue. I know I did that a few times in the past.

just my 5 cents worth.
have you got all 3 of the above loaded at the same time. if so more than one antivirus loaded can cause havoc with computers.

 

So just wondering have you updated the BIOS to the latest? And since this over heating problem have you cleaned out the cooling fin and fans and taken apart the laptop and redid the thermal paste for the CPU or GPU if you have one? Just sounds like a overheating problem causing the freezes and lockups? Since I don't have it in-front of me to diagnosis that is a hard way to diagnosis that kinda problem.

i would clear the event logs, then use the computer normally until the problem happens again. that way you dont have nearly as many logs to look through after you boot up. post the messages to help us out.

 

I haven't run that diagnostics, I'll do that and report back.

Edit: Just kidding, I have run this diagnostic several times with no results.

I've looked at my system logs and I can see where I've had to power down, but I'm not noticing a pattern of events before that.
It has happened with and without devices (flash drive, usb mouse, bluethooth adapter, etc) attached.

I don't see a power management tab for my devices in device management. How would I get to this?

I checked out the event logs and I haven't noticed anything suspicious. I need to clear them out so I have a fresh place to start from when the event happens next.

Nope, don't have all of them running. Only one installed still is MSE.

BIOS is latest version. The last update was April 2010 lol.. Not an overheating issue though, I monitor my temps constantly and clean my system every week or two.

Go to the individual device, open properties and look for the power management tab. Not all may have it, but any that do, uncheck the "allow put to sleep, or put computer to sleep" something like that. I would look it up but on a non windows tabby right now.

Even though you had your SSD replaced, if it shipped with old firmware, that could still be causing the freezing issue. An older firmware of some of the Crucial SSD's had that exact problem and it was solved with updating to a newer firmware. Just be careful if you do, one of the very latest firmwares caused even more problems so be sure to double check.

 

System freezing could be a motherboard problem too, so do not look at hard drives first to blame for your problems. When the cause of your unresponsive computer is the motherboard, no system log would report that. When your system freezes, does the hard drive led light up non-stop?

From my personal experience, I've confirmed my motherboard in my W520 was faulty. When pressure was applied to one side of the computer such as using one hand to hold the side of the computer, the ThinkLight would automatically light up without the use of the Fn Key. My computer would also randomly freeze at random times and this occurred with 2 spinning platter drives and an solid state drive. Since the computer is covered under warranty, I brought it to my local certified service center listed acknowledged by Lenovo and they insisted it was a hard drive issue. They replaced my keyboard and refused to replace my motherboard. My W520 still freezes randomly and has the ThinkLight issue.

The SSD that I am using shipped with a newer firmware, and I've updated firmwares twice since then with the same issues.

There isn't a HDD activity light on this computer. That's a good point though, I've wondered if the motherboard could be the culprit, but I have no idea how I'd diagnose that.

 

Had another freeze. Freeze occurred at 4:16. On battery power this time. Here are the system logs:

Reasonable is subjective, catastrophic high temperatures will shutdown your system completely, but high temperature can slow it down a lot or cause freeze. I had this problem with a Studio 1558, which is nice but has a bad heat dissipation layout. I would recommend to OP to tried to use hover to clear any debris from the radiator before taking any expensive or difficult tasks.

A heat dissipation problem matches the random nature of the freezing.

 

The laptop is always clean as a whistle.. Highest CPU temp I get is approx 62C (fans bring it down to 50's shortly after) that is while playing LoL. I've had freezes while on a cooling pad at 32C..

 

I haven't had a freeze since the last one I posted here. Only thing I've done differently is leaving Throttle Stop off or at the "Internet" settings. I used Prime95 to stress test the CPU when I set the performance profile to unlock the extra .5 of the multiplier on my T9400, but I guess it doesn't like it any more!
