Hi People,
Please take a look at the screencaps below.
few minutes back I had the symantec service framework stop working suddenly, and it just started back again and its all normal now (there was a pop-up saying 'windows will notify me if it finds a solution to this problem'. Thanks MSFT.)
I checked in even logs, one if from system event log, and the other cap is from application log.
Faulting application ccSvcHst.exe returns many hits on google. For this 7031 error, there were suggestions that something else caused the symantec service framework to stop working. So tried the faulting module in google, BUT, faulting module ccL80U.dll returns no hits. Anyone knows what ccL80U.dll is? Or does anyone know what happened and any way to fix this / prevent it from happening again?
*I thought of going online with Norton Chat, but decided against it, since I can't let them take my system remotely and restart or something, as I am currently doing some important work*
Thanks in advance people.

Ah ok >
If someone has any idea, please let me know people. Thanks
Edit: Looks like it *may* have something to do with the Norton Insight Scan... Not sure though!!!
Edit 2: Ok, tried as much as possible but could not come up with anything really informative. There are couple of threads in the norton forum', with this module error issue, but no solutions or anything! And this error seems to be random too, and not specific to some scenario. There were people reporting that they had this issue as soon as upgraded to NIS '09. Not for me though... bahhhh..
-
It seems that this problem is connected somehow with Outlook(or any other mail clients which use POP3..) and it seems that Symantec are aware of the problem but I cannot find any fix for it. Apparently people with such problems returns back to NIS 2008.
Check this thread.
Edit: Someone blame Vista's "Mail Junk E-mail Filter" update(octubre 2008) for the current situation. Check if you have this update installed. -
^ Thanks Mate.
Yeah I saw the same thread. But I don't use outlook or any other email client at all. I don't even have them installed actually. So I am trying to see what might be wrong. And this is the first time its happening. So I am kind of lost. Also, while this error happened, the system was in idle...
Btw, in any case I want to watch this for a while before making decision on moving back to NIS '08. NIS '09 is really great. So lets see.
Thanks again, atthegates -
No problem, will keep searching
You checked if you have Vista's "Mail Junk.." updated installed?
Try to disable the e-mail scanner.. -
Btw, a correction on the prev post. It's true I don't use any email client's, but I do have outlook installed. Not thunderbird or anything else.. But as I said, I don't use outlook too, anyways.
Edit: saw ur email-scanner tip just now. Checking it.
Edit 2: Hmm.. Yeah, you are right. There are some who uninstalled the October 2008 windows mail junk e-mail filter update. May be I will do that too, and see if this happens again. Thanks again mate atthegates -
Hope you got it fix. Keep monitoring it though, it's not a resolved issue. For some people disabling the e-mail scanner worked but for others not. Will try to find out more about this.
-
^ Yep, thanks. I am trying too
will update if I come across anything.
-
Okie.. it happened again.
So I have uninstalled the October junk email filter update. Let me see if I am seeing this error again. (though I must repeat, this resolves on its own. The symantec service framework has stopped working, but its back on its own.)
Let me see if this error repeats without this junk email filter update. -
Yeah I was afraid that the problem will come back...No new info though. Did the framework used to restart itself before? Maybe this is a different error/crash.
-
No its the same error, error code, faulting module etc.... and yes, the symantec service framework starts itself, both the first time and yesterday..
Also, I just realised that the "junk email filter update" from MSFT, has the same KB # for all months?!!?!?!!!
KB905866
so does that mean I have to uninstall all those updates (Oct, Sep, Aug....?) For the moment I have just Oct uninstalled.
Further, there seems to be a pattern in timing.. it happened on both the days around 10 PM my time here... I am not trying to look in more to see if there is something thats supposed to be done y the service framework during that time.. like some scheduled task or some reporting back or whatever. Till now, I have not idea what it is, but I am looking around still. -
I think the junk mail updated just replace the previous one. So you actually has only the latest one and when you remove it - you had no more junk mail updates installed.
The thing with the timing is weird...Can you open the Event Viewer->Application, find the framework error and see if there are errors/warnings event right BEFORE the framework error. This way you can check the timing of all the errors too. -
-
Ok fine. I have had enough. It happened again, BUT this time, I figured it happens exactly when Windows Update is checking for Updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windows Update check itself shows no error or any reports or anything. But Symantec service framework stops, and starts again in 120,000 milliseconds.
Right now, I am waiting on symantec chat.. let's see what they are going to say. -
"Please reinstall the application"...........................
-
^ lol.. you think that' going to be the response??
Well.. I might as well do it myself now, then. What do you say, atthegates?? -
Update: LOL > they are escalating this issue, at symantec... the first guy could not come up with anything.
-
j/k
I hope they come up with something.. -
Ahaaaaaaa...... I think I just figured out a work around..
I disabled Norton integration with "Outlook" from within NIS Control panel / settings, because I don't use outlook anyways.....
and now, no more crashes or service stoppingBut for people who do use outlook, watch out... because NIS has some good email integration / protection feature. But since I don't use outlook or any other email client, its not really important for me.
what I did was, NIS Control Panel > Settings > Internet Settings > Client Integration > Configure > Uncheck "Outlook" under "Email Clients". I left the address book entries checked in though.
And now when I do windows update manual check, the service framework is not stopping anymore.
WHERE is the Norton / Symantec Technical Support guy who used to come to NBR??? I Hope he see' this.
Also, now I think it makes sense for people who thought / observed the MSFT Junk Email Filter update was causing this issue.. Probably its a combination of that, with the NIS Outlook client integration feature....
I hope Norton will look into this more.
As for my support session, I was put on hold to wait for an escalation engineer, but it never happened. But I am planning to get on Symantec chat again tomorrow morning, and tell them this.. Lets see how it goes.
Edit: I will be monitoring this for a day or two, and I will get back with what happens. I think this might just turn into a serious fix or patch (for the good of everyone), considering even no one in symantec forums have received any help either for this issue. -

Browse all the way down to the last post, from user "TomiRed"
Apparently the error in that case listed BEX in the event name, the workaround was to fiddle around with the DEP settings (pictorial there in that thread!!!)... For me though, I haven't had this error and it was always the ccL80U.dll, which was causing the crash and it has stopped ever since I disabled the NIS integration with the Outlook Client. -
More Updates:
There are reports of errors with
And for the initial BEX error, the resulting service framework crash and the involvement of DEP, here is some more info from a technet article > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738483.aspx
For those interested in more, follow up on the thread linked in my previous post to the Norton Community Forums, and continue on to Page 9........

Hi fonduekid,
This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.
First, manually run LiveUpdate, possibly multiple times, until it informs you that there are no more updates available.
Disable the email scanning feature and also disable the "Idle Time" scanning feature.
Lastly, make sure there are no other real-time scanners installed on your machine to make sure that a software conflict is not causing the problem.
Please try these settings and test and let me know if you still experience the same problem.
Thank you,
Mike -
Hello Mike,
Here you are.. Been expecting your arrival
Thanks for dropping by.
In short, I guess you must have read my more recent posts, and yes, the idle time scan has always been off, while I have also disabled the email client integration from within NIS control panel. I have not had the crash since then (and I have been posting about this / following it up in the Norton Community forums too!!).
So, it looks like there is some issue (at least in my case) with the outlook (or probably other email client) integration feature. -
Update:
A symantec support person recently responded to the thread discussing this issue on Norton Community Forums, saying it will be fixed with the next update. Just thought I will keep everyone here informedCheers.
-
Good news
I guess you'll solve your problem pretty soon after all -
Update:
Another confirmation, this time on a personal level - Norton is working on this Symantec Service Framework crash issue, particularly with regard to the Email Client Integration feature and its supposed conflict with Windows Updates (which they said, it might be something to do with Norton' Spam Scanner), in the very near future. I guess this update / fix would be available through Norton' Live Updates. -
Update:
Hi People,
Few days back (I guess on November 11) there was a big update for NIS, and also there was a new Norton shortcut placed on my desktop.
Now, I don't know if *this* is the fix / update which the Norton guys were talking about, with regard to the symantec service framework crashing (mainly due to the email client integration feature conflicting with the windows junk email filter updates).
That shortcut too is nothing harmful, but its the usual shortcut placed on your desktop when you install some new software or program. Now I did not reinstall NIS or anything. It happened automatically, and so I assume this happened through Norton' Live Update feature (which was what the Norton Support personnel told me as well, with regard to the fix being made available through Live Update!!!).
I am yet to test if everything is fine now by re-enabling the email client integration feature in NIS, do an update for Windows Junk Email filter, and see if the symantec service framework crashes like before or if everything is fine now!! I will do this later today or during the weekend, and then get back here with the feedback / observations.
If anyone else has seen an improvement or think if this issue is fixed please feel free to share hereWould be very helpful.
More soon. Cheers. I hope this was the fix!!!!!!!
