Allright, I'm having major problems, I cannot install SP1. I have installed SP1 during the beta stage and then after a clean install I had the RTM loaded on this machine.
Now, after another clean install a month ago, I am unable to install SP1, I've tried both Windows Update and the standalone, both give me the same exact error.
Error 80070002
I have tried every suggestion at this link here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
I have elevated my permissions to my Windows folder and attempted to repair the contents of my C:\Windows\winsxs\Backup folder per another forum and still no go.
I'm clueless, any ideas?

There's two versions of stand alones.. one for x86 (32bit) and x64. Make sure you get the right one.
-
Yes, I've been using the x64 version.

I thought Ultimate had to wait until mid-April to get SP1, for Microsoft to finish the language packs for the 31 (Windows) languages other than German, Japanese, French, Spanish, and English. Seems silly to me that they couldn't just add that on later if you had one of the five "ready" languages, but that may be why you're having trouble with the service pack.
-
No, they released it for the initial 5 languages, you can read the article here:
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/w.../03/language-packs-and-windows-vista-sp1.aspx
It shows up in my windows update on it's own, so I know my computer is ready for SP1...at least technically it is. =(
EDIT: The article seems a bit confusing, but it seems like Ultimate with the 5 languages is part of the "first wave" which I assume is right now since it shows up for me. -
Welcome to the club!
I've had many updates which've failed to install with this error, and I have found no solution whatsoever. Here's hoping SP1 installs properly when I format my notebook tomorrow.
-
Make sure your copy of Vista is registered. Sorry for the "you forgot to plug it in" suggestion but that will make a difference.
-
All the updates work fine, until a day when none of the available do, no matter what. Then, a week later, I update again, and it works flawlessly.
-
Interesting Char...I know that Vista has been activated, but I'd venture to say I skipped "registering" it. A quick google and check in the Control Panel leaves me feeling like a silly n00b...how do I get to the Register Windows doodad?
EDIT: I actually found something using Microsoft's own Help & Support Utility...you need to open the Welcome Center.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/registration/default.mspx#
...too bad the page returns errors and I can't register.
Just curious, does registration place any files onto my computer? I would think it was simply me receiving e-mails & "Special Offers" via email.
DOUBLE EDIT (I'm such a keister):
I tried the link using IE7 x64 and it worked. -
What I did was go to start then right click on "computer" then hit "properties" then at the bottom of that box there is an activation status. If there is no link and it says you are activated then thats all you can do as far as I know.
-
Im having the exact same problem. Vista Ultimate X64, activated but not registered, clean install since this morning. No drivers are currently installed, and the SP1 wont appear in my windows update. And when I use the standalone, I get this exact same error. Did you find any solution?
-
OK Char, that's what I suspected, you were talking about "Activation" not "Registration". Activation requires a serial key, registration does not.
-
any update on this issue? Mine still wont work.
-
Nope, I'm still pending. I've got some microsoft techs on it for me, and also a post here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3027114&SiteID=17
I'll update as soon as I get things working.
Anyone installed SP1 on x64 with AVG antivirus isntalled? -
FIXED:
OK everyone, this takes several hours, but I'm up and running in SP1. Supposedly I had a/or some corrupt files/components somewhere. Here is the method that worked for me:
Turn off Windows features
================
1. Click the Start Button, click Control Panel.
2. Click Classic View on the left pane, and double click Program and Features.
3. Click "Turn Windows features on or off" on the left pane.
4. In the Windows Features dialog box, uncheck all of the check boxes, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Now, let's perform the following steps to repair the corrupted files:
NOTE: In-Place upgrade will not remove any installed programs or files on the computer. It just repairs the system. However, it will remove all of the installed updates, we need to run Windows Update to reinstall them after repairing. In addition, I suggest backing up useful files to avoid data lose...you never know what will happen.
In-Place upgrade (Repair install)
==============
1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:
If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.
If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK.
Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.
4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista. Please make sure the edition of Windows Vista is selected correctly.
If the above steps finish, please try to install SP1 again.
NOTE: At this point I got some wierd error in Windows Update, I googled it and found it to be a timeout error, I disabled the windows firewall and tried again and all went well.
