I just found my XP disc after 3 weeks, it was in a game case for some reason. That is why there were "delays".
I had a few virus problems a few weeks ago and part of what I deleted let me get into "Help & Support" so I couldn't get to restore points [if they were still there]. In the very least, helpctr.exe is missing, God knows what else.
System Restore says it is running in Services, I guess that is something. But it has been 3 week and Avira and some new games were installed in the meantime.
Long story short: How do I use the disc to replace the missing files and fix my XP? What so I type in run...? And am I looking to click something specifically along the way?

I wouldn't even bother with a repair for such a system.
Clean install FTW -
-
I would just clean install it...

Or you can go to Start->Run, type sfc and hit enter. sfc means System File Checker, this will scan your installation and will tell you if files are missing. If it find a missing file you will have to use the CD, and sfc will copy them.

I agree with Thomas and IBO, though flipfire's post does answer your question. Personally, were a virus to find its way into my machine, I'd do a clean install, unless very important data were stored and not backed up.

I paid someone to install this for me and IDK how to slipstream sata drivers or make an ISO bootdisc. Mind you, I tried to understand it, but I have practically no experience with managing files. I don't even have a mp3 player or burn CDs. I just got the computer for gaming.
Until 6 months ago, except for doing papers in college [98-02], I didn't touch a computer since before I graduated HS in 1988.
*That sfc command made the console flash for a second then close, but there is some other command to put in run... that will ask me to put in the XP disc because I tried it when they told me of it on gamefaqs, but the threads is gone there and I can't remember it. -
Good Luck! -
I agree at this point. If you're interested in slipstreaming, this and other advice using Google can be found easy enough. Seems though, that just getting your machine running properly is the most important issue at the moment.

I'll bring my laptop to work wednesday night so that I have another computer to post on should I run into questions. [*Also I can print the "repair install instructions. Also, I blew a fuse the last time I ran both my comps here if you're wondering why I don't use my desktop]
I added the /scannow part [you should be more precise] and it seemed to work, but I took the disc out after and restarted and it it kept crashing. So I reverted back through the bios. Too bad I don't see a way to choose older restore points though the bios. It would add the virus back, but it wasn't a that destructive a virus. I could just take it out more carefully next time. -
if i were you i would just do a clean install just to make sure you get rid of all viruses...it is sufficent to boot from the cd and that's it!

from atthegates:
"type sfc and hit enter"
So that is what I did 1st.
I didn't have time to try the repair install tonight. If it doesn't work I'm not going to bother with it. It is still making restore points and I can get to the last good one though the bios if I need to. The only two things I can't do are make my own restore points and revert back to any restore point other than the latest.
I don't think that is good enough a reason to do a full install.
