We have an optics shop that is connected to the traffic and licensing department to do eye tests for people. The government wants to implement a new system with an ID Card Reader so we don't have to enter the details of the person manually. The problem with the card reader software is according to the instructions sent by their IT department, we must have Google Chrome v40.0.2214.111 (x64) offline installer and disable automatic updates.

I have scoured the internet for that version and all I can find is bogus links which have viruses in them as NOD32 blocks the download before it starts.

Can you please guide me to where I can download that specific version for a safe place?

    Ugh..lazy developers.
Stable versions of Chrome are released about every 6 weeks with security patches being pushed at any time. I'm sure you already know that running an outdated version of a web browser (any web browser!) is a bad idea but I know the feeling.

I once had to develop a web app that was going to render on multiple "smart" TVs which were running Chrome v26 . At that time the current version was v39 something.
Since Google doesn't make available old builds for Chrome I turned to finding an equivalent build of Chromium, which does not auto update either.

See here for obtaining an older build:
    https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/download-chromium

and here for the version you're looking for:

Ohhh Chromium! I totally forgot about that! Thanks a lot.

Oh and I do know what a risk it is to run an outdated version of a browser, try explaining that to the know it all IT muppets at work.

hmm, I clicked on the last link but there are so many files I don't know where to find the actual EXE installer :(

I have them at work too. It's always nice to "show them up". The look on there face is priceless.

Have you tried contacting your vender for the offline installer?

Not only lazy but incompetent if they didn't include it.
How did their dev test their build if no one carried it? o_O

Alternatively, you could just grab the 40 branch off chromium and build it yourself.

    @katalin_2003 @toughasnails

so here is the deal guys, after spending so much time not being able to get this old Chrome or Chromium and giving up......

I then realized something else, they provided us with an ID Card reader called OMNIKEY 1202, they also provided us with the driver for it but guess what? the driver doesn't work, so I then searched for the driver on the manufacturer's website and found it, but it also fails to install on Windows 7.

Their IT department assured us that this while thing will only work on Windows 7.....

so I just tried plugging in that card reader on my Windows 10 Phoenix laptop and Windows 10 found and installed the driver automatically, so one problem gone....

Next, I tried running their software but I installed Pale Moon x64 bit since they wanted us to use Chrome x64 as Pale Moon x64 bit supports Java and it worked! so much for their bogus instructions which they labeled as "easy and straight forward", I don't know what their IT guy is smoking, but I will send them a full report of my findings and how I got their system to work very easily by simply NOT following any of the flawed instructions they sent us.

Ahh ... It didn't hit my head until you said Java and why the Chrome 40 requirement.
It was the start of the NPAPI being hard phased out.

The official java have warning for those who are using chrome to stay away from it.
Though the other major browsers following suit as well.

Yeah that's probably why their IT guy wanted us to use the old Chrome for NPAPI support, but he didn't even provide us with the offline installer of that version or any download link. He could've simply asked us to use another browser which supports Java! Heh

Sounds to me like someone got this software from a "no brand" company at a big discount instead of going with a reputable company.

Indeed, that's what I felt when they were telling us to use an old version of Chrome, lazy programmers who cannot get their buggy software to work with the latest browser.

What's ironic is, this is for the roads and transport authority, the richest entity here in the UAE (Dubai) they make millions of dollars yearly just from traffic fines, each time a radar catches a driver over speeding, they get a #$300 USD ticket! that's insane! They had them mobile radars in trees and balconies of apartments in the first floor and on top of bridges so you can never memorize where they are heck you can get a radar snap you overspeeding from the clouds it seems! yet they cannot hire a reputable company to make this software for them to read the ID cards of people who want to come to renew their driver's license
