HI,
I have a new dell laptop with XP PRO and a 1 year old dell desktop with XP PRO.
I want to use the recovery disc from the laptop to reinstall XP on the desktop, using the windows product key that came with the desktop for the install. will this work??
thanks.

Yes it will work.
I take it that you don't have the XP Pro disc for your desktop anymore right?
If not then here's what you can do.
Put your XP Pro CD for your dell laptop into your desktop. Install it on your desktop using the product key from your desktop which should be on a sticker somewhere on the case of your desktop.
If you have any questions just reply -
If it is a recovery disk, and not an install disk, then you might have some serious driver problems. Make sure it doesn't restore to "factory settings", ie: it would install XP and all of the applications/drivers/junk that was on the laptop.

Thanks, The Dell people said it should work. I will try it tomorrow and let you know.

I did the re-install today. All went well but the network, and audio drivers were not on the disc as it was for a different system. I had to go to dells site and download the correct drivers, then all was well in the world.
thanks
