Ok so my SP1 Vista 64 home premium is up to date regarding automatic updates etc....I have my system AU set to download but ask me to install...I did this oriiginally bc I like knowing what my system is installing and running instead of getting surprises. This is why I have to date CANCELLED installing IE8 and AU doesnt search for it anymore...however...everyday I shut down my laptop..upon restarting it will download SP2 and ask to install...its quite annoying and a waste of my harddrive spinning...IS THERE ANY WAY OF "CANCELLING" the update or getting AU to disregard SP2 and never look for it again? Im not installing SP2...its not beneficial and I just will not be doing it. Any help? Thanks

It IS beneficial, and you should just stop trying to swim upstream and go ahead and let it install and be done with it. Why are you so dead set against it?

Thanks Gary. The reason is that the "benefits" are insignificant (i.e blu-ray support etc..) the SP2 update is not really anything special.. a cumulative update of things I already have through AU..it is actually NOTHING special to be frank. The reason I do not want it is bc SP2 DOES have some issues after installation on SOME systems. I dont want to take the chance. A simple google search will display the results of perfectly running OS's prior to the install and then driver/incompatabilities etc.. after. Some even get BSOD'd and reformat. Not saying its a virus or even a HUGE liability, but to me not worth it. Like everything in life, just weighing the benefits/advantages vs the potential outcome of OS issues. Thanks but No thanks

I failed to see the argument of " the results of perfectly running OS's prior to the install and then driver/incompatabilities etc.. after" - if you already stated that SP2 is nothing but the accumulation of all updates that you have before.

And you are not weighing anything about the outcome of different OS, but a Vista service pack which is according to you - again, only a collection of previous patches.

You might be missing out of future important updates where the requirement would be that SP2 must be present before installation can continue.

Last but not least - I have yet to see or experienced myself on any bad side effects of Vista SP2. Maybe you can share us with some links of bad experiences of yours.

    cheers ...

If you are being offered SP2 by Windows Update then you don't have any of the problematic drivers. And do you honestly believe that the google search you suggested is a good indicator of why you should or should not install SP2? You do realize that the folks who installed it without any issues do not bother to post that fact, right? Pretty much the only folks who do are the few who had issues. As qhn indicated, if you don't have SP2 you will not get some of the newer updates offered that require it. The benefits FAR outweigh your paranoia. Look, if you are so concerned, image your C: partition and rest assured that if something does go wrong you have a way to get right back to where you are right now. (That's just a good practice anyway.)

You really are swimming up stream. Just image the partition, apply the service pack and get it over with. Then you don't have to continue to waste time looking for a way around this.

Have you tried right clicking SP2 update and selecting, "hide update"?

Just image your drive first, there are free tools available to allow you to do that. This way you have a fall-back position if there is a problem. Besides doing this would pretty much guarantee there will be no problems. :D

Not if your system won't boot, and you were so afraid of that being a possible outcome. (I am not worried about that, but a couple of days ago YOU were.) I have NEVER installed any service pack without having an image. For that matter, if have never been in ANY situation where I did not have an image of my C: partition available.
