i'd suggest a clean install of vista home premium. most of the slowness of vista, and stability problems and all went away on friends hp notebook once he made a clean install without all the hp made stuff.

he tried xp as well, he didn't got it to work.

a friend installed xp on an asus notebook instead of vista. it had occasional hangs, and some bsod. he then reverted to vista and learned to use it. he won't go back anymore now.

    1. Make sure you can boot from your CD drive first. You can change this on the BIOS (f10) or press f2 for boot preference.

    2. Before doing so, burn a recovery CD. Copy or burn the SW Setup directory from the laptop as this has all the programs and drivers. XP drivers might be on it too.

    3. Download all the XP drivers at the HP site specific for your model, if any. If there's none then you may have to go to each manufacturer's sites.

    4. Upon booting from the CD, delete all the partitions and format..not quick format.

    5. Continue with installation on primary partition.

    Good luck.
