Try NTFS Undelete, it's free and works with NTFS.
Some utilities on a Linux live CD might come in handy as well, such as fsck. grep can also be used to scan the raw bytes of the harddrive to locate and recover any data with text in it. -

Try downloading a copy of trial windows vista home premium and use it to fix your windows installation. When it fixes the installation, it'll also fix your mbr. Thus your data will not be erased through this process and you keep your OS intact.

You can download the file here (vista recovery CD) to fix the MBR.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,71039-order,4/description.html
Burn to an iso and select repair option to fix the boot problems.
Another option as suggested is a Linux distro. Puppy Linux is small and loads solely into your ram (no hard drive installations etc) so makes it easy to load onto your system even with a hard drive that is acting up. -
some one told me that if my MBR totally failed i can;t recover my data , is that true? -
now i used an OEM vista disk and i can't find any windows installations , so i chosen automatic repair , its now autorepairing but the bar keeps moving from right to left and from left to right , and the LED of the harddisk is constantly on , how long should i leave the computer trying to repair??

It's always a good idea to wait a little while until you have multiple suggestions before just launching into the first recovery idea.
I don't know what the vista autorecovery program is likely to do--probably nothing bad.
The first step is to run testdisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
Testdisk can recover partitions and rebuild MBRs in some cases, so you should always try that first.
If you are looking to recover pictures, it's sister application PhotoRec is the best I've used for recovering photos.
Both are free.
For documents and data files like music the best I have every used is EasyRecovery from Ontrack. EasyRovery is not cheap, though.

This is what you use when testdisk fails...it recovers data file bu file, but with no respect to directories--after recovery, it takes a lot of work to sort through the mess. -

Personally, I find it easiest to use the windows version and mount the damaged drive in a different machine. However, there are a number of LIVECDs with testdisk already on it

If you are not comfortable with linux. I'd recommend the ultimate boot cd
