This is getting on my **** nerves. I cant remove ctfmon.exe and it keeps placing itself in my startup. I've done EVERYTHING. I've deleted the file itself, it comes back very quickly after deleting it. I've used msconfig to disable the file in startup and it just makes a new entry for itself and comes back a couple days later (Theres currently 10 ctfmon.exe's in my msconfig startup menu...). I even went into regedit and deleted EVERY reference to ctfmon in there and that still didnt help. The entries come back after I restart the machine. I'm totally out of ideas after the registry removal.

I know ctfmon is usually a legit microsoft file, but I know there are some cases its some type of malware. The copy of it I have is a legit microsoft copy. I've been able to ID it as such. And my antivirus and anti spyware programs are up to date and wont recognise it as a bad program.

microsoft.com identifies this file as a part of Microsoft Office. But I dont have MS Office on my system.

Any help would be VERY appreciated!

ctfmon.exe is part of MS voice recognition, handwriting recognition.... You don't need to use any of this software; MS puts it there, just in case.
What operating system do you have? When I had Win98 on an older computer I also uninstalled it because it made the hard-disk grind and grind, but now that I have WinXP on a newer computer, I just keep it there.
I think you have seen these already, but here are MS specific uninstallation instructions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599 .
You say you don't have MSOffice. Did you have it in the past? Maybe it did not get properly uninstalled when you uninstalled MSOffice

I just read that it could be part of language packs; I have found the following on the net "If you are using any of the IME language pack additions to the NT or XP operating systems this will be on your system."

I had the same problem, and I followed some removal instructions to the letter, but it still came back
I got rid of it by going to Control Panel --> Regional and Language Options --> Languages --> Details --> Advanced --> Turn off advanced text services
This doesn't delete the file but it stopped it running at startup for me
    Hope this helps

Why remove it? I'm all for a lean system, but it only uses 3400k in my task manager. Does it do something hidden I'm unaware of?

You have to edit your features when MS Office was installed. You might be required to use the MS disc depending on how you configured it when Office was installed. Here are the instructions:

I tried that when I was trying to remove it, but nothing worked until I did what I said above
@ LFC - I decided to remove it because it was hanging at every shutdown so I had to press end program every time before I could power down, many people have issues with cftmon.exe

Its been hanging up my startup and shutdown and demands random access to the internet (firewall of course stops it). In my mind that means its gotta go.

I think its gone now though. I turned off the advanced text thing. I hope it stays gone :-/

Oh really? Good luck then! I've never had it hand on startup, but more curiously never had it ask for permission to access the web

It used to try and access the internet with me too, very strange
It's stayed away after I turned off advanced text services for almost a month, hopefully it won't come back

    Oh no!
I don't know what to say now, mine stayed gone.
Maybe someone else has soem ideas?
Stupid thing, what's the need for it to keep coming back?
    It's like a virus . . .

I stopped it from running on my computer (XP PRO) by doing the following:
    1) Go to Start>Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Languages Tab:
Make sure both boxes are UNTICKED.
    2) Go to Start>Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Languages Tab>Details button>Advanced Tab:
UNTICK the top box (Compatibility) and TICK the bottom box (System Cofiguration)
    3) Go to Start>Run
    Type: Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll and click ok
    4) Go to Start>Run
    Type: Regsvr32.exe /u Msctf.dll and click ok

Along with doing this I have also heard of people renaming the file (Windows/System32 folder), but I left mine alone since is does not show up any more after doing the 4 steps above.

    Hope this helps.

It's not so bad. It's just that in this particular situation, the usage of the word was somewhat condescending and is what caused the discussion to take a turn for the worse.
