Quite annoying actually, I have seen some posts of similar problems, but nothing quite like this so I apologize in advance if this sounds like a rehash.
When I load any disc into my drive, Windows Media Player opens. I have tried turning off all autoplay options in the drive, checking for any suspicious files in msconfig and trying every possible setting within media player itself. There are no "autoplay" options in WMP as some have previously suggested. It doesn't matter what the disc is (game, movie or whatever) that's inserted and the program is easily cleared, but it is really bugging me. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The machine works great otherwise and I haven't loaded any new programs lately. I hope someone out there has an idea about this. Computer sig below, the drive is a Matsushita UJ-846. Thanks.

Well, lets club the problem over the head with this solution:
Go into the registry editor, find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
Now find the entry 'Autorun', and set the value to 0.
So, as you probably realized now, you won't get any annoying autorun popups from now on...from anything. Heh, I did say "club" the problem... -
Thanks Gatordude, I originally liked your idea very much since I was never a big fan of autoplay anyway. I immediately effected the registry change.
Much to my dismay however, it didn't work. This leads me to believe that the gremlin lies with WMP somehow. I checked the software settings in regedit for the program but I couldn't find any autoplay options.
I'm still stumped. Any further ideas please? -
Wow your Autoplay must be undead or something. Does WMP open and try to play the media on the disc? Or does it just open regardless, without attempting to play anything? It could be the drivers for your CD-ROM...try updating them. I recommend disabling the drive via device manager, uninstalling the current drivers, then installing the new drivers that you find (make sure they're the right ones). Also, try updating to the latest version of WMP.

It just opens and sits there, laughing at me without actually trying to play anything! Well, it seems like it's laughing at me after all the settings I've tried. So you think it's the device turning gothic on me and not WMP itself? I would have thought the opposite since it is WMP that truly appears undead. I will try your suggestions and report back. Thanks Gator.

What about uninstalling WMP instead of the drivers?.. or is this even possible? Think this option would be a little less harsh.. considering it's WMP that's the problem.

Yes, try uninstalling WMP using Add/Remove Programs--->Add/Remove Windows Components.
Now try popping in a disc and seeing if it gives you some sort of Windows memory/file error. This would be an indication that some script or program is linking WMP with the load CD action. If this is the case, you need to find the script in question...good luck
However if that's not the case, go ahead and reinstall the latest version of WMP from MS's website.
Help requested with peculiar WMP glitch...
