I'm trying to restore a vista pc (hp desktop). It looks like theres a partition on the internal drive that might have the backup, and theres two external drives and the owner thinks each has a backup on it. Only thing is I don't know anything about vista and can't figure out how to restore the system. What do I do? Is there software I need?

What sort of a "restore" are you doing? Winding back an otherwise functioning system to an earlier date, or trying to repair a nonfunctioning installation?

Generally for the first kind, there's an MS utility under Programs-Accessories->System Tools called "System Restore."

System restore wasn't seeing the backup. I did find what I think is an image of the disk on one of the external drives and I could get the files back that way but it would mean going through 300+ folders and copy and pasting everything. The system right now works because they re installed windows but theres files that I guess they want.
