    I have a Linksys WRT54GS router.
One of my roommate uses Bittorrent a lot.
24/7 he is downloading something and it is really screwing up my Internet conenction.
Sometimes I even have hard times to open google.com
So, is there any way that I can Bittorrent from my router or any other way?
When he left his computer at home, I went online and blocked from his parental control. He is sort of a noob. He thought it was some problem with his pc and formatted it.
Now, torrent works fine so I again blocked it from parental when he was away.
Its the 4th time he formatted in a week.
So, I have to find other way to block it so that in anyway I don't get in trouble since the ISP has my name in record.

So help me out with this.
    Thanks

You can try blocking the site he gets his torrents from. There should be an option to block websites somewhere on the router.

Recommend putting dd-wrt on your router. You'll have control over pretty much anything internet related if you do that, be it setting parental timers, cutting off net at designated times, filtering/blocking websites and/or traffic protocols (torrents) - the best part is that you can set the rules to only apply to his computer, or multiple computers, or globally!

Today I tried QOS but it blocked the whole internet in my roommate's pc.
He was freaking out that his internet was not working for past 12 hrs but I acted as if I didn't knew anything.
So, how can I just block some websites from the router, if possible whole torrent?

Have you tried the old-fashioned way of talking to him about it? Stress that you often have trouble accessing the internet because of his excessive downloading and that your name is on the bill and you are responsible should something happen.

Other than that, as others mentioned you can block individual ports on your router. I don't know specifically which ones, hopefully another user does or I'm sure you could find the information with a <strike>google</strike> <strike>bing</strike> internet search.

I wouldn't make a habit out of sneaking on to his computer when he's not around and changing permissions on it. It's not ethical nor will it solve the problem. Plus, if he ever finds out, it's not going to be pretty.

I tried changing his permissions and set torrent to low priority.
As soon as he finds out that torrent is working slow for multiple downloads, he just formats his PC removing all the settings I have done.
As I told before, he formatted 4 times in a week.
So, its worthless whatever I do in his PC.
I tried talking to him and he ignores that he is downloading torrent when I clearly see his bittorrent working in the taskbar showing the status of downloads.
So, I cannot fight there telling that he is a liar but close the bittorrent from router.

If you have a 'roomate' that outright lies to you about something as sily as internet usage and bit torrent, can he be trusted with anything else in the house?

    toss him out.

assuming that when he formats his pc he names it the same way everytime then you can block his internet access using the "Access Restrictions".

I don't think the idea here is to block his internet access completely - I'm assuming he pays his portion of the internet bill and doesn't get it for free. Tell him that you do not want people downloading torrents if the internet is in your name, then go and block the ports used by bittorrent on your router.

I would honestly refrain from trying to indirectly blocking your roommate from torrenting, and just really talk to him. It'll do you both no good if you have to keep manually blocking him without his knowledge.

That said, these threads throw out some potential ideas.
[other] Block Torrents via Cisco/Linsys Router - Ubuntu Forums
How to disable Torrent downloads using my router? - Cisco Home Community

I think the most promising is using the QoS features (see: Wikipedia - QoS) in your router's configuration to limit his total bandwidth usage so that his torrenting won't kill your internet, and will be so slow that he'll probably stop anyway.

Press Windows key + R --> Type CMD --> Type Ipconfig --> Look for: Default Gateway (should be 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or something similar) --> Memorize or write that down. --> Open you internet browser and type http://(that number) in the address bar. (ei: http://10.0.0.1) --> It should ask you for username and password --> Unless you set a custom one it should be: admin and admin --> Once in, click "Access Restrictions" --> Now this is where it gets tricky because I'm not familiar with this router --> You need to block services/ports 6881-6999 and set it for all or just his computer. I would try to be more detailed here, but I wouldn't know exactly what to do unless I was accessing it in person. --> Make sure you apply your changes. --> Bittorrent should be blocked.

I had a similar situation in college. block the ports and reset his connection time to time. it's like being pecked to death by a bird and he'll eventually get the message. Tell him to DL the XXX on his own time/bandwith.

How about you tell him to stop?

Or go into his bittorrent application when he isn't looking and set a download and upload limit.

And tell him to stop torrenting lmao it's the tiest way to pirate AND the least secure.

It's probably and he's embarrassed to admit to it.

I feel the best thign to do is to limit his download and upload speeds, that way he won't be like "uh it's stopped working" he'll just think it's a slow torrent.

Go in and block EVERY port but 80 for his IP.

Personally, I'd ask him once if he's downloading a torrent. If he lies, I'd switch the security settings and change the password and lock his *rear out. Just sayin. There's no reason to lie about that. Because even if you limit his upload/download speeds like others have suggested, his torrent client is still holding a ton of ports open, and that really isn't solving anything.

If you block the ports he's just going to reformat his computer and get really confused... he'll know that there's a problem...

If you just lower his speeds he won't know that anything is wrong.

Something I discovered is that if you limit your upload speed it'll help out a lot.

I have a NAS/Torrenting/FTP machine hooked up to my network, and whenever I had a torrent running or an FTP transfer going on, it would kill my gaming ping and make pages load uber-slow.

However, I tweaked my settings and limited my total Torrent and FTP upload speeds (across all total transfers) to 200 KB/s each. I was able to torrent and game together with a roughly 5ms impact on my ping.

I don't know if this is my special case or anything, but have him try that. Better than his constant formatting, haha.

    DD-WRT using 2 ways.

    Access Restrictions and/or QoS Throttling.

Access restrictions will allow you to block websites or P2P services on specific hours.

Then there is QoS throttling, which will allow you to set his maximum download speed. It will also keep your traffic untouched.

What you do is set the down/uplink speed you want him to have, say 3000/512kbps (375KB/s download)

-Add his IP/MAC address and put his traffic under Standard.
-Now add your IP/MAC address and set it as exempt so your packets do not get touched and you do not fall under the 3000kbps limit.

Meaning if you have a 10mbps connection, your friend can only utilize a maximum of 3mbps of it while you have the rest. This is how i stop my family from hogging the speed and my download cap.

This is the trick. Single most effective thing you can do, not counting the kick-the-roomie trick :)

And it actually speeds the downloads too, so your roommate might like the change. It doesn't really matter what you set as the upload maximum, 90% would be fine. I think I have usually something between 35-70% set.

I went into his bittorrent and limited the connections and download speed.
Today when he was out, I checked the status of his torrent.
Lol, he had uninstalled bittorrent and installed Utorrent and getting more than 500 connections.
Damn.. I don't know how to deal with this guy.
Probably a chainsaw will come handy :p

Do you or do you not have control of the internet connection at home?

You've been given some very good advice as to how to block/limit torrents at the router.

    Follow it.

that whole situation would me off. id flat out tell him look i know your still running torrents and if you keep it up im gonna block you permanently. then when he does it again block his pc for 3 days and tell him apparently you dont take me serious so i wont take your internet serious.there has to be a way to block the executable. i looked in my router settings and i did see a spot where you could enter addresses to block websites. i would put that in so he cant get torrent files. he can continue to download torrent files he already has but he shouldnt be able to get new ones.
