All of a sudden I can no longer backup my quicken file. I put a formatted DVD into my E drive and when I try to back up quicken it says unable to write to E drive. I have been backing up quicken the same way for 2 years, what can I do to try and fix the problem.

Sounds like you updated to Vista.

If you can backup to a location on your C: drive, perhaps your CD drive is having problems writing?
-
That appears to be the problem, how can I trouble shoot that? -

Can you write CDs and/or DVDs using that drive via other programs?
Can you write to a CD (rather than a DVD) via the Quicken backup? -
Does this mean the software program I'm using to try and backup quicken is now faulty, what should I do? -

What program are you using to backup Quicken?
-
It appears to be Veritas Record Now, it is the software that came with the Sony DRU500a drive I bought several years ago. Like I said i have been backing up quicken with the same system for a very long time. In quicken all I would do is click backup choose my drive and click ok. now that doesn't work. I'm certainly not that computer savy but I'm also not a total newbie. (well, maybe compared the people on this site I am.) -

Quicken has an internal backup that can be performed ad-hoc and/or set to automatically backup at some user-determined interval. The backup location can be user-selected as well. Then all you have to do is offload that backup.
It may depend upon which version of Quicken you are using; however, in the version I have here, it is under FILE/BACKUP.
The issue with Quicken not being able to backup itself up showed up for me when I went to Vista, which is why I posted the original link.
What version of Quicken are you running? It's highly likely that an older version, say 2001 or so, might not understand a DVD drive; however, you should still be able to backup to a different location on your C: drive and then copy that backup to a CD or DVD using another program. -
I have quicken 2006 deluxe. If you are talking about storing my data online with quicken, I don't feel secure with that.

No, I would not store my data online, either.
I save to another location on my C: drive and back that up.
I would expect that formatting a DVD would create an empty and unusable DVD, no? -
I have tried, I saved the file to C drive, I don't back up my entire C drive, when i try to to back up just that quicken file I get an error message. I have been able to back up other files.

Perhaps another method of backups?
-
I have quicken 2006 deluxe and use a usb flash drive for quicken data file backup. If your computer has a memory card reader you could even use an sd memory card. Takes about 5 sec to do a backup. Much easier and faster than cd/dvd backup.
Don't rely on your C: drive for backup because if your drive goes dead you will have lost both your quicken data files and your backup info. -
Thanks for everyone's input, I'll give your suggestions a try.
