After running the program and performing the uxtheme.dll patch I restarted my laptop. I downloaded a patch version of uxtheme.dll here... http://www.withinwindows.com/uxthemes, its the SP0 not the AMD 64. I didn't unzip the files prior installing and running the patch from the program. Was that suppose to be done before patching the .dll? After the patch, I downloaded a theme from wincustomize and it was a .desktop extention. After creating a folder with the name of the theme in the windows resouce subfolder and copying the extracted file to there, I ran the Visual Master and tried to run the theme from there but it won't show up as a .msstyle. I also tried to unpatch the .dll file but an error saying 'unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click quit, the application will close immediately. Attempted to perform an unautorized operation'. I copied and paste the ORIGINIAL uxtheme.dll and the other two in a seperate folder just incase if it was needed. Why isn't the 3rd party theme working and how does vista visual master patch the uxtheme.dll only or does it also patch the themeui.dll, and shsvcs.dll. How do I know that the patch is installed, because the original uxtheme file is 235 kb and the patched one is the same size. Help needed. Thanks.

Okay, I downloaded the 'take ownership program'. Before I added it to the registry, I made a back up. I took ownership of those three files and it created a .old.vistamaster file. I then went into the vista visual master, unchecked the patch and checked it again and rebooted. Well after reboot, the desktop is in classic mode. It doesn't have the vista basic and aero themes under the control panel. So I copied the three patch files pasted them in the window folder, which replaced two of them but it said that the uxtheme.dll was in use so that couldn't be replaced. Now I uninstalled vista visual master and tried to copy and replace the original uxtheme.dll with the patch but it still says it's used by another program. I'm stuck and don't know what to do now. I have the old reg and .dll backups.

Good thing you have the old dlls back ups. Now what you do is to rename the files(dlls) currently in your windows/system32 folder to a different name, such as Old.uxtheme.dll. As this point you can chose to restore the orginal dlls by renaming it back to uxtheme.dll, and vise versa for the others, or go ahead and apply the patch yourself which is to download the patch dlls and place them in the folder. After you replace the dlls (With original or patched), restart the computer for it to take effect.

Well, after restarting the vista areo themes are back, I renamed the original uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.dll.old, and copied the patch to the system32 folder but there is also a file named uxtheme.dll.old.vistamaster (was automatically created when I took ownership of the file). So now there are these three uxtheme files and I can't delete the uxtheme.dll.old because it still says it's being used by another program.

try uninstalling visual master and see if that frees up uxtheme.dll. if it does, reset all the .dll's to their original state and just try the whole thing over again.

on a side note, ive been customizing windows for a long time, and anytime ive ever had any trouble it was when i used a styler app...ie stylerXP, window blinds, etc....
stick to the manual method and you'll never go wrong.

Vista visual master is gone and the uxtheme.dll patch is installed and the old uxtheme is free, but is it okay to keep the other two there (uxtheme.dll.old.vistamaster, and uxtheme.dll.old), the patch has a gear icon while the other two has a program window icon. I downloaded some themes but they are in a .wba extension. Does it have to be a .theme or .msstyles extension? Where can I find themes with those extensions?

I did read your manual, but I'm still having trouble enable the 3rd party themes. I took ownership of those three file's which automatically created a .old.vistamaster file, patched the files and rebooted. I downloaded a .theme file, added it to the windows resource subfolder and double clicked the theme. When I applied it, nothing happened. Why is it really difficult for me but easy for others? I must be doing something wrong...the right patch is downloaded too. I'm probably going to start over, can those .old.vistamaster and .old and .old.2 files be deleted? Thanks
