Thank you for any and all help provided,

I was given a Sony vaio VGN-AR760u, had vista on it. Had to reinstall vista but can't install drivers from the sony vaio web site all drives give an error of not being installed correctly and don't install. What could be happening with this laptop? I know it has 2gb ram a bluray drive blue tooth nvidia graphics nothing else?

If you go into Windows Updates are there any drivers in there that you can use? I'm not entirely sure about Vista because I never used it.

Yeah, in Windows 7 it does, not all of them though. Not sure if it's the same in Vista. - Pretty sure it does though.

Yeah, well, Windows 7 carries the basic drivers to at least run the system, but if you go into Windows Updates it should have the specific drivers for the devices, if not you will have to check out the manufacturer. If they still don't work, it's definitely not the OS. More so the notebook itself.

Sonys are a bit particular about order of drivers in order to work (hence you driver did not install messages).
    Here's your model driver page:
    Sony eSupport - VGN-AR760U - Software Updates & Drivers
Here's a guide on a clean vista install for Sony - generic but will give you the idea- based on what is listed for drivers, just install in the order listed below.
Sony eSupport - Electronics - Support Information
Another option (assuming the hidden partition is still there) is hit F10 when the computer is booting - then the recovery center will come up and you could reload the system that way (would have the out-of-the box OS and bloat), but would have all the drivers working.

Windows Update will have a menu entry on the start menu. (or can type it in the search bar)
You could run that and see if it will help. Also it will update your Vista install with the latest Service Pack and patches.

    Look here:

Try the latest drivermax ,,,the program is free or pay, it scans your system and lists updates for drivers and much more, you need only create an account and then run it.

    Cheers

Thank you all so much for the help,

So what I ended up doing was another fresh install using the vista os and I went to the sony web site to install the drivers again and I notice some drivers install this time that last time gave me erros and the others that did installl correctly didn't install this time and gave errors. So I went step by step with the install doing it 2 more times and I was able to get it up and running. I think but am not sure that it was the wireless internet drive that I installed was the problem. The other to time I ran it first so that I could sit and install every thing else comfortably. The last install I did I installed it last and since everything else went through good.
