Trying to access a website, but it needs to use an IE VLC plugin, can only access this site using the horrible disease that is IE, only thing is, when I use IE, it blocks the plugin from downloading. It is VLC's website it is accessing VideoLAN - VLC: Official site - Free multimedia solutions for all OS!, yet gives me no option to choose to download it. I've tried changing some settings in IE, but as i've not used it for years, can't really remember how to unblock it. Any help would be appreciated. As at the moment I just get a million and one popups from windows and IE saying your not protected (thanks for telling me, but I changed the settings myself, stop taking over my machine you disease of a cancerous browser arghhhhhhhhhhhhh)
As you can tell, I'm slightly frustrated by this![]()

Not to worry, downloaded firefox, and worked a treat, VLC plugin works on that, good old trusted firefox, for this, I may return to you (chrome has been annoying me lately), behold the great Firefox lol!!
-
LOL you are still using ie 6?
-
nope it's the latest version of the disease that is 9, that blocks everything and takes over your machine if you dare tamper with the settings, also from what I've heard from friends, a web developers nightmare, god I hate it so much!!!!
-
cheers, use to have all that when I was a firefox user before, so it will go back on.

a clean installed windows + ie + mse allows me to install any addin on it, including vlc. -
No big deal now anyway, won't be going near it again lol!!
Edit: Semi-Facepalm moment, just turned UAC right down to lowest setting, and low and behold, it works. Strange though, as it worked straight away in Firefox without doing this!! -

and now, put uac up to default again.
besides: both bing and google have this on their top result: Windows has blocked this software because it cant verify the publisher
now vlc should get their .. stuff together and certify their code properly. it's not like viruses that spread are something new, they should know that unsigned code can do anything, and thus should never be able to install. they should thus not have unsigned code on their page.
anyways, just put uac back to default. -
I.E. can stay gathering dust in the cupboard, hopefully be a while before I have to go anywhere near it again, back to the trusted old workhorse that is Firefox.
Can't really say I've ever had to many issues security wise with FF, always done the job for me, but yup, obviously something strange going on with the VLC site. -

well, untrusted code installing easily on firefox shows me another reason to never touch that again anymore.
as i'm on the move from chrome to ie currently (part curiousity, part why not?, part because i use ie on my phone already and it works very well), i can not say to stay away from it anymore. it evolved into a great browser. very fast, very lightweight, and, right now, the most secure of all. -
Thanks for suggestion on IETab2! I use it mainly to access Microsoft stuff, lol. Here I am an MCP and don't even use their browser... oh the shame.
-
I "second" everything that Dave said in here.

and to htwingnut: FOR SHAME! i have to call m$ to cancel your mcp! -
Ah dang, I didn't want to start a browser war lol (hope it doesn't turn into one), was just frustrated at the time, maybe the title was a bit harsh.
Each to their own for whichever browser anyone chooses, if IE makes you happy, fair play, same with FF, Chrome Opera etc. -

no browser war here. i couldn't right now say which one is best (but, for me, firefox lost most of it's mojo, while ie gained much again).
what i don't like is omg something wrong lets try the next, instead of finding out what the issue is, learning something on the go, and then be a proud more knowledgeable person.
this is what got me curious about this topic.
oh, and yes, the title was quite harsh -
"The best" is just too relative at this point. Though I'd be happy to discuss it I'm not in the mood, this isn't the topic, and that only ever serves to bring in fanboys who aren't willing to change their minds about anything.
I'm with Dave on that, I think people jump too quickly. -
When I've got a spare few minutes (or hours lol), I may try and have a see what the problem was. I do agree that getting to the bottom of an issue is the best way to go, and normally when faced with issues, I will try to find a solution, and very true, you generally do become more knowledgeable in the process. -
