I just tried watching a DVD on my laptop and it's not making a sound. 10 mins ago I had some headphones in and it was working fine. Now I only get sound when headphones are in.
This is the first time I have noticed this problem and the speakers were working fine earlier today.
I'm using XP Pro, won't switch to vista for at least a few years ;), can anyone help?

Just my normal ipod headphones. Nothing in control panel, sounds and audio devices that seems useful

Nothing like that as far as I can tell. The output is not muted, and I can't see any options for different outputs either.

nope. I tried resetting a few times as well so there was nothing else running but I didn't get the windows startup sounds or anything unless the headphones are in.

i can only suggest un.installing the audio device and let xp re.install it and see what happens. Hopefully that the iPod headset somehow did not fry the connection to the laptop external speakers

    cheers ...

I just uninstalled then reinstalled the latest drivers for my sound card but no luck.

I thought I'd see if it was a a hardware problem or a windows problem by turning on the asus startup noise again but no luck so I guess its a hardware problem.

On another note, when mashing the F keys (I couldn't remember the one to get into the bios) I got a screen saying that windows 98 was being started. Whats that about?
