Ever since my last reformat, it seems that Vista indexing just won't turn on.

I get an error ("Windows could not enable Windows Search...") whenever trying to enable the service, and all the options are grayed out under the Indexing Options.

I tried the solution presented at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85803-index-windows-search-service.html however it does not work. I think the reason it may not be working is because whenever I try to create a "Windows" folder in the "Applications" folder (as mentioned in the tutorial), the "Windows" folder is delete automatically. I don't know what is up - I even tried turning off Read only but to avail.

Help? I am getting ready to compare several different desktop search tools and would like to include Windows Search in them.

EDIT: Oh and I am on Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

So... just to clarify, if you go to Computer, and right-click on your Windows drive, and you don't get this option? Or if you do, you get an error when you try to apply it?

    Thanks.

That option is checked and is supposedly working fine.

But when I open Advanced Search I get a message telling me Indexing is not on and asks me to turn it on. I click on it to turn it on and it never does.

Then also if I run "Indexing Options" it tells me indexing is disabled and all the options are disabled except "Advanced" which really does not lead to anything.

I don't know for sure if this would be good, but maybe if you unchecked that option, and then re-applied it, it would fix it? I'd give it a try, but it's your call. :GEEK:

    I already did. It didn't work :(

I even tried to go into Safe Mode and make the Windows folder but that did not work either.

Did it ever work? Tried a System Restore? Just to double-check, have you tried going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off and checking there? Also, have you checked to see that the service is running?

    Thanks...

Tried it all but a system restore.

I know it worked before i formatted...but i think the formatting may have screwed it up.
