I have an Asus z70va -- a total lemon I think.... I have had nothing but problems since I got it.

Well, in the last few months, periodically, I couldn't get Windows to start. Then it would.

Well, I was away for a week and I turned off the Asus just before I left. (I take my far more reliable HP notebook with me when I travel.)

I just got home... I press the on button and the Centrino icon comes up and then comes a screen that says

"We apologize for the inconvenience... blah blah blah... and then it say that somehow the last time Windows loaded it was interrupted, or there was a change in hardware or software. It then gives me 4 options: to start in safe mode, safe mode with c: prompt or safe mode with networking or to start in the last correct settings. Or I could have it start normally.

Well, I tried all of the options. And every time this same screen would come on -- It seems like Windows would start to load then a blue screen with some writing would flash for a split second and then this black screen with the white writing saying what I just said up above.

I kept trying different modes and now it won't get even that far.

I have an actual windows XP pro CD -- not a recovery disk but the actual operating system. It came with the Asus.

Anyway, can anyone help me? I have been too busy to send this machine back into pro-portable -- the screen started to malfunction a year ago but then it came back -- and then several weeks ago the bottom third went out.

And I have been having these intermittent problems with Windows loading. But they went away for a couple of months -- and the thing has been turned off for a week -- so I have no idea what happened.

    Can anyone help me?

I kind of need step by step instructions.

Ok, you should boot from that XP CD and see if you can repair the startup. If not, you should boot from a Linux LiveCD and recover any data you need off of the machine, and then reinstall Windows.

I'm having the same problem as Justitia and I already did a reboot from the XP disc. But it seems that all my data has been wiped out as the laptop is turned into its manufacturer's state. Please help if there is any way to recover my files???????????????

I troed to rebooy from the XP disc (whihc is the actual XP OS SP2 not a recovery disc) and it would not boot.

Given Angie;s situation maybe I am lucky.

I cannot beleive it but I have religiously backed up all my data for 20 years but this past year I have been plagued with so much goign on in my professional and personal life ... that I just stopped doing it.

    I am really scared now....

Like I said, try to get ahold of a Linux LiveCD of some sort and boot from it if you can, and try to access and recover your data.

I will try that. I have a pretty smart tech guy at work who can help me out.

But will that solve the problem if it is a HDD failure?

If your problem is getting your data back, then no, you won't be able to get at it if the HD has failed or is corrupted, but it's worth a try...

Make sure your booting from the cd when your trying your xp disc. If you get your xp cd to run go into the recovery console and type chkdsk /p. If it finds an error then type chkdsk /r (which will repair). If that still doesn't work get a hold of NTFS for dos, boot into that and run its check disk. If you need help finding let me know. Its seems to me that a simple check disk is all you need

Well, she said she couldn't boot from the XP disk...

    So, Justitia, are you

    1) Inserting the CD
    2) Powering on the laptop
    3) Hitting the key for the boot menu
    4) Selecting the CD drive

    ???

    I didn't know about step #3

    How do you do that?

Right now, my plan is to take it to my tech guy at work and see if we can't get my data of the drive first.

Then we will fool around with it. I am sure he knows step # 3 .. :p

there really is no need to format just yet. It is a good idea to backup your data unless you really just want to start from scratch

It's going to be one of the 'F' keys (F1, F2, etc). In fact, I would expect it to show up on the Asus splash screen when you turn it on....it should somewhere say something like

    F2-----BIOS
    F12----Boot menu
